However, I do agree that those shows go waaaay too far to titillate viewers and drive up ratings. On the other hand, people clearly can't get enough of this kind of stuff. Who's to blame? The shows? The viewing public? The people who willingly appear on those shows, who have to know or at least suspect it ain't gonna be good news? I mean, if Jerry Springer or similar called me up out of the blue and wanted me to appear on a show...I'd say "no thanks, being humiliated on national television just isn't my cup of tea". KWIM?
But would he have killed him if he hadn't been publically embarrassed on National TV? That's my question. The guy didn't have a criminal record, but the gay man may have pushed into his worse nightmare, sexual advances by a gay man. We can agree most of the time this happens in private, but National TV? As I recall, the straight guy was laughing in an embarrassed way the entire time, but after the show was over, he got to thinking about it. I know killing him was drastic, and he deseerves to be in jail, but WOULD IT HAVE HAPPENED IF NOT for the program?

People do weird things when their lifestyles are threatened.

And not everyone is conscience enough (at least, not back then, notice how those shows aren't around much now?) to suspect something like this. Eight years ago, if say Montel Williams people called me, I would have thought, wow, they found my long-lost brothers or the best friend I had in Jr. High, bith of whom I was looking for back then. Or maybe some relative I never knew exsisted died and left me a million dollars, and they want to see my face when they told me about it. I can't imagine what my reaction would be if say, they discovered my High School math teacher (who was a miserable old leach) was there to profess his undying love for me.

One never knows unless one is put in this position, and these shows just have no idea what the person they are doing it for have done to us previously. All they care about is ratings, and not people's deep seated fears. And when it involves sex, well... that's one of our deepest fears, unwanted sexual attention.

you have a good point but I think if he wasn't embarrassed on national TV by the gay guy, he wouldn't have done it. I just don't understand why didn't he just declined the offer to appear on TV?

Truely a sad story. I really do not support shows where someone is taken on a show to receive a surprise. Most of the time it is a good thing, but this illustrates how it can go tragically wrong.
