gas powered??
Does putting a heating butane instrument next to your face sound like a good idea??? Just say HELL NO!

My deepest sympathies to those girls and their families.

I can't imagine putting a gas canister next to my face or my hair either for that matter. The thought of letting my daughter is not even a probability. Those poor girls, prayers to all.

When I worked at Walgreens (in the US) less than 2 years ago, they were still in stores. Drugstore.com still carries them:

Perhaps now that this happened they will get taken off the market.

I don't think that it's cuz the tongs are harmful under "normal" usage, so they ARE approved. It's just that... when 4 girls are doing their hair and everything at the same time, and probably one showering too, the heat, humidity, and OVER-usage all at the same time caused the explosion...

Anyway, I hope they'll get better.

Yes, they still sell them here in the US. I've never heard of one exploding before this. Those poor girls, it's so sad.

I received one of those curling irons for Christmas when I was in Jr. High, a Lonnnngg time ago! I didn't use it that much because the sound it made when you started it up. It sounded exactly like the "hisssing," sound a gas stove makes before you light it! Plus the fact that it did get so hot, as a 13 year old I kept burning my forehead...curling the awful bangs!

I hope these girls recover quickly...how horrible to happen around Christmas.
