The HS I graduated from was exactly like this. I went to 3 different ones, but this one was the worst... it was a huge "super school," so they basically ran it like a prison. They had a no beach balls and no cap throwing rule for graduation, so someone from my bf's class brought a blow up doll & were throwing it around. They were all removed & had their diplomas withheld! It sucked. That HS was a very bitter, unhappy experience for me. They sucked the fun out of EVERYTHING!

We had so many inflatables at my graduation it was ridiculous. There were HUGE inflatables too.

And this guy blows a kiss? I mean, yes, it was dumb and he shouldn't have done it but COME ON. Withholding a diploma that took 4 years to achieve because he blew a kiss? Talk about the punishment not fitting the crime.

After reading both articles, I have come to the conclusion that the superintendent has major issues.

^ditto. Teachers and such get soooo pissy when kids try to turn graduation into something FUN. They just take the fun out of everything. I understand there have to be certain rules, but, come on, seriouslly, let these kids have a little fun! I see nothing wrong with inflatables or cap throwing, but school officials make it seem like do it and die. Ugh. This is why I hated high school.

So he'll still get the real diploma but not the ceremonial one??

However, I do agree the "rule" was taken too far and the kid didn't do anything inappropriate.
guess it depends on the high school. I got it once the ceremony was over...

Absolutely ridiculous. And they wonder why kids go crazy in college, its because they werent allowed to put a toe out of line in HS.

I think after 12 (or more) years of school, most high schools want the graduation ceremony to be DIGNIFIED. It's a rite of passage, not a fricking party. Depending on how many students are graduating, if for every student we stopped to cheer, blow those stupid foghorns, send up balloons, toss a beach ball around... do you know how long it would be?

And for those students who don't have parents in the audience or a large group of bubbleheads to clap for them.... they get to walk across the stage in silence?

Honestly, I'm just about ready to say do away with the pomp & circumstance. It costs the school money to host these things (our school has to spend money on lighting, security, chair rentals, etc) and with budgets getting slashed, and no one respecting the ceremony.... what's the point? Let the families celebrate on their own.

Send everyone their diploma in the mail. Then no one has the opportunity to sue. Boo freaking hoo.

What did they mean by "unauthorized cord"?

This is the actual video of the graduation:

He blew a kiss and bowed.

The "unauthorized cord" was a necklace made for him after he won a state track final.

I didn't see anything of him turning this into a circus.

Maybe Superintendent Stickuphera . . . . I mean, Superintendent Lukas wanted to make an example of him.

They did ask that only Honors studens wear cords around their necks, but from what I read, his track teammates were also wearing those championship cords.

That's the first thing I thought too! Haha. But this is such BS. That superintendent (sp?) should be fired/severely reprimanded.
