Snake Slithers Into Reporters Pants On Live TV

POSTED: 1:52 pm CDT August 8, 2008
UPDATED: 2:34 pm CDT August 8, 2008

DES MOINES, Iowa -- KCCI-TV Meteorologist Kurtis Gertz got quite a surprise during a live broadcast from the Iowa State Fair on Thursday when a snake slithered up his pants.

Gertz was on stage during the live broadcast and had the snake placed around his shoulders, but it didn't stay there.

Gertz asked if the snake had grown from last year. The trainer said that she grew 3 feet from last year.

First, the snake's head got inches from Gertz face and stuck out its tongue, giving him a kiss.

"Hey, that was a hot, wet kiss," Gertz said. "I got a hunch this is going to make YouTube."

As he continued to hold the giant Burmese python, people in the crowd started gasping and pointing. The snake's tail had slithered up Gertz pants and down the other leg.

"This is Dawn and she might have a crush on you," said Nick, the snake trainer.

"This is how it all comes to an end Steve, this is how it all comes to an end," Gertz said. "It's been a great 20 years in television, God bless."

Gertz took it in stride as the crowd watched.

"OK, let's go to stupid human tricks. Let's see you top this one," Gertz said.

The snake's trainer and co-anchor Steve Karlin helped unwind the snake and get Gertz free.

I just love those snakes! Such a beautiful color, and so friendly and playful! The Burmese python is the golden retriever of the snake community, kind of like the boa constrictor is the plump and elderly poodle.

Because poisonous snakes can, well, kill you, all snakes have gotten a bad rap, and unjustly so.

Learning to recognize at least the poisonous snakes that inhabit whatever part of the world you live in is just basic safety, but it can also be an empowering first step to overcoming Anti-Snakeism so that the next time you are introduced to a nice non-venomous snake from a good family you can go ahead and make friends with it without blaming it for tragic events that it had no part in, or deadly attacks that it does not even have the technical capability to launch, even if it wanted to, which it doesn't, although as we see in the video, it may want to crawl up your pants.

I'm a firm Anti-Snakeist, even reading this thread title made me shudder, I can't possibly click the link to the video. Don't even know why I came in here, must be the masochist in me...

That was hysterical. My x-bf had the same type of snake and I used to walk around with him over my shoulders all the time. He would wrap around one leg to hang on and he was the sweetest snake. He would even follow me if I walked in the grass. That attracted a LOT of attention. He was at least 8 feet long.
