Default Rio de Janeiro Wins the 2016 Olympic Games!
Being from Chicago, we were so excited at the idea, but for some reason I could just NEVER picture it - it never seemed like it would ever happened, and after today's IOC vote - it won't be. Chicago was eliminated after the first round (you should heard the gasps and the shock at Daley Plaza, where a rally was being held!)

In the end, it was Rio de Janeiro who won the games by a HUGE margin of votes over Madrid (Tokyo was the second city eliminated)

While it's a big disappointment for the City of Chicago, I am excited to see the games come to South America where they've NEVER been held before. I imagine it will be a gorgeous event with lots of color and pageantry.

Rio to host 2016 Games after landslide win

COPENHAGEN (Reuters) – Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympics after winning a landslide victory over Madrid in the final round of voting among International Olympic Committee members on Friday.

Carlos Osorio, general secretary of the Brazilian bid, told Reuters: "Overwhelming, spectacular, unbelievable."

The Brazilian delegation broke into singing their "Marvelous City" song, all waving flags and hugging each other.

The announcement, which was delayed by several nervous seconds as IOC president Jacques Rogge struggled to open the envelope, left Brazil President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and much of the rest of the Brazil bid team in tears of joy. "Like in every competition there can only be one winner," Rogge said.

"Tonight I have the honor to announce that the Games of the 31st Olympiad are awarded to the city of Rio de Janeiro," Rogge said.

In the final round of voting, Rio polled 66 votes to 32 for Madrid.

Carlos Nuzman, Rio bid leader, hugged President Lula, both in tears and said: "We did it, we did it."

Former tennis champion Gustavo Kuerten, a bid ambassador, said: "This is an amazing result. We are going to be working from tomorrow to make it happen. Brazil will do the best it can from this great opportunity."

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero told Reuters: "Rio was a great candidate. We put up a great fight."

In an astonishing start to the voting, Chicago, the odds-on favorite, went out in the first round, despite receiving unprecedented support from United States President Barack Obama and the first lady.

Obama had become the first sitting U.S. president to address an IOC session.

Tokyo followed them out in the second round, leaving Madrid and Rio to slug it out in the final round.

Rio will be the first South American city to host the Games.

It's definitely exciting for South American and Rio, but I am very disappointed as well. I really wanted Chicago to host the games!

I am thrilled for the people of Rio & Brazil! The Games have never been held in South America before and with SA's prominence growing in the global business market, it's a great recognition of their emergence onto the world stage!

I had a feeling it wouldn't be Chicago because I think the US has hosted at least 3 Olympic games in the last 25 years or so, and since they've never had any in Brazil or South America for that matter, it was time to go somewhere new. It's sad in the fact that it would have brought more jobs to Chicago, though.

I'm glad for Rio & Brazil. I think it's going to be beautiful and Rio definitely could use new jobs too!

I wasn't surprised Chicago was eliminated first at all. Rio has been the city heavily favored and the US has hosted 4 Games in the last 30 years already.

Salt Lake City - Winter 2002
Atlanta - Summer 1996
Los Angeles - Summer 1984
Lake Placid - Winter 1980

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...s_host_cities:

The United States has hosted a total of eight games: more than any other country. France has hosted five and Germany, Italy, and Japan have each hosted three games. Canada and the United Kingdom will host their third games in 2010 and 2012 respectively.

It's time for a new country and new continent to have the honors!

Honestly, I'm not disappointed it's not in Chicago at all. I'm actually really happy for Rio, Brazil. They deserve to have something wonderful like that because the Olympics have never been in that area before, and they have been in the U.S. before. So congrats to Rio! I'm sure it will be beautiful there.

Don't be too disappointed, folks. Olympic games are not the windfall of $$ they used to be. In fact, many cities who have hosted them in the past have lost millions/billions. Athens and Salt Lake City are two recent examples....... (Don't shoot me) but I'm relieved that someone else got the games. The last thing an American city needs is to take a financial hit like that, especially now.

I agree. I shudder to think how much the London ratepayers are going to have to fork out for 2012 (and beyond most probably).

But apparently Peter Ueberroth, organizer of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics (which was the first privately financed Olympics, as far as I know) made a $250 million profit. However, this is not the norm. Montreal in 1976, for example, faced financial debts for 30 years and I'm sure we'll never know the how much the fantastic Chinese Olympics cost.
