So is this going to be a "Winter" Olympic or Summer Olympic? Isn't August the winter season in South America?

^^ Let's see...given the cycle of every 4 years (Beijing summer 2008 and London upcoming in 2012), this would be a summer Olympics, which I guess would have to be held in a more typical summer-like time in Rio? Or is the weather not as variable year 'round so it doesn't matter? I am just not sure.

Rio's winter climate is very moderate (lows in the mid-60s to highs in the mid-70s) with low rainfall. Perfect for Summer Olympic sports!

I think the setting will be beautiful, and I look forward to seeing lots of beautiful Brasilian men in the opening ceremony

Having spent many years traveling to and working in Brazil, I am so happy for them. It is THE place for a party and I am sure this will be their biggest party yet.

I don't get why so many Americans are sad (some even angry) for not getting it, AGAIN... They have hosted it a few times now so it is time for others to get their chance and as South America had never hosted it, it really was pretty much a waste of time to even try.

I for one am happy it is not in the US. The Brazilian show will be one from the heart and not a artificial-made-up-just-for-tv one that the US has become so famous for. (and Brazil has a more favorable time-zone compared to Chicago for me which ensures I can see more events).

Sorry to be forthright, I have many American friends and I love to visit the US, but there are some things that bug me about it (like with so many places, including the one I live in) so don't take this as an anti-american rant please, it was not intended as such.

I had a feeling America had a high number, but wasn't sure. No offense to anyone from, living, hoping to live in Chicago, but I'm not shocked at all it wasn't chosen. Even if it did create jobs and pour some money into the economy, I think things like that are band aid solutions. I.e., the same people who get job because of the olympics lose them when it's over. So, it's back to square one. Maybe it's just me, but I don't pay attention to/watch the olympics. So, that might be why I'm not sad America is not hosting any time soon.

I just feel very bad for out mayor (Richard Daley). This has been his "baby" and he was so excited and it really brought a sense of joy to a man who's usually very reserved.

I've been reading a lot about this today and members of the IOC have spoken out about the vote and pretty much said it was nothing against Chicago, but more a "slap" to the USOC who has some very bad ties and relations with the IOC (IOC members said the slap to Chicago was more directed at the U.S. Olympic Committee than to the Windy City itself.). I also suspect that the "scandals" involved with the last two US held Olympics (the bombing in Atlanta, the bribery scandal after the Salt Lake City games( hurt out chances. I also hear some very cruel things said about our President - that I find uncalled for (he is the first and only US President to EVER make an appearance at the vote!!)

I am also saddened at the loss of jobs and revenue this would have generated and the growth and building it promised. Yes, I know that most host cities have had financial difficulties and troubles going into the games (look at the trouble for the "foretasted gloom that Beijing had to face!), but in the end, what do we remember? The wonderful opening and closing ceremonies, the friendships that were formed and the comrade of the athletes and volunteers.

I hope that Chicago tried again sometime, altho I imagine it won't be anytime soon!

ITA and thank you for putting it in a way I couldnt. I didnt post because I was trying to not make it political lol but Im actually glad that we didnt get the olympics. We dont need the financial strain most of all.

Congrats to Rio!

Yes, it takes YEARS to pay for all the buildings etc. for the city that hosts. Not worth is at all.

I was sort of surprised as I think Madrid and Tokyo seemed to be a "better" choice judging from major pros and cons, however it will be a great opportunity for Brazil and especially rio. =) Congratulations.
