Default Police officer resigns over Facebook comment
Really???? REALLY?? But he's right!!!

Quote:
BOZEMAN, Mont. - A Montana police officer who wrote on his Facebook page that there should be a law allowing police to take people to jail for being "stupid" has resigned.

Bozeman City Manager Chris Kukulski says Cody Anderson submitted his resignation Wednesday.

He says Anderson related that his resignation was in the best interest of the police department. Anderson apologized for his online comment last month, saying it didn't "reflect an attitude or atmosphere within the Bozeman police department."

His posting came to light last month when a Bozeman man filed a lawsuit against the city, Anderson and other officers, saying his civil and constitutional rights were violated when he was wrongly arrested.

The lawsuit alleges entries from Anderson's Facebook profile indicate he has a lack of respect for citizens' rights and a willingness to abuse his position of authority.

this is the problem with facebook people! u put something up and its out there. ud think a police officer would have more common sense. joking among colleagues is one thing, putting it up on facebook is quite the other.

now. resigning seems a bit extreme imo, but i guess it was in the best interest of the department in light of this lawsuit.

Bozeman is the same city I posted about that is requiring potential job candidates to disclose all their social networking sites and passwords too.

When will people understand that posting something online is like publishing it in the newspaper? Once it is out there, it is out there. It does sound trivial enough that resignation might have been an overreaction, but I have little sympathy for those who create their own messes in this regard.

i wonder if it's because he used the word "stupid"....some people are very touchy about things like that. if he had used 'incompetent' maybe it would be a different story....who knows

He had to resign over that? Good lord, that's petty.

Although, if they suspected that he was going to endanger the people he was sworn to serve and protect, maybe it's a good thing? I don't know.

I don't think that's the issue, I think the point is that he said he should be able to arrest people for doing things that are not illegal. No matter what word he uses, it still implies the willingness to abuse his power.

I agree that it's kind of petty, but I agree with Roo that everyone needs to realize that you shouldn't say anything online that you're not willing to go outside with a bullhorn and announce to the world. They're one and the same. Internet anonymity doesn't exist.

Ah...only if stupidity were something that a person could be arrested for. Of course, criminals in general are stupid, so I guess it is something that we can get people for.

I keep warning people about using FB or other sites that require you to use your real name. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER use your real name on the web!!!!!!!!

Even boards like this can track you down if they get a court order requiring them to disclose records unless you take extraordinary steps to conceal your tracks.

Don't even use the same screen name on dissimilar sites or boards.

Resigning probably was a smart move. This is why my accounts are all set to private!
