Default NY man's next blood donation will be gallon No. 40
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090907/...llons_of_blood
Quote:
WOODBURY, N.Y. – A New York man is donating his 320th pint of blood this week, making him one of two people in the U.S. who has given 40 gallons.
Seventy-five-year-old Al Fischer of Massapequa (mass-ah-PEE'-kwah) plans to reach the milestone Tuesday, 58 years after he started giving blood.
According to a New York Blood Center official, only 83-year-old Maurice Wood has donated more blood than Fischer. Wood is a retired railroad inspector from St. Louis.
Fischer, a print shop operator, donates blood about six times a year. He says he and Wood are engaged in a friendly rivalry and last spoke to each other a few months ago.
Long Island Blood Services executive director Harvey Schaffler says Fischer has helped almost 1,000 people.
So awesome!!

Until I was in my mid-twenties, I was too light to donate, so once I topped 110lbs, (minimum weight to donate) I became a blood donor. Unfortunately for me, once I made to my first gallon when I had a 2nd reaction to donating. The first time I donated, I hadn't had breakfrast & got dizzy. At the last donation, I was impatient & sqeezed out the donation, then got up too quickly.... I fainted.

Blood bank's policy was 2 reactions = no more donating for you. I was so sad. My goal was to become a super donor (56 donations) because one of my favorite teachers in high school was a super donor.

I bug my DH to donate on occasion in my place, but I wish I could still give. Less than 3% of our state population provides the blood for all the transfusions in the state!

Wow, that's amazing ! Good on them, and even having it become a bit of a rivalry, so adorable !

I'm also too light to donate.. I did it twice before by fibbing, and I almost fainted the second time so no more donating for me.

Wow, that's incredible! I have never given blood because nobody can seem to find my veins. Lol.

That's wonderful!

I would love to give blood, but they don't want it.

When I was three, my family and I lived in England for about two years. Given when we moved there and the length of time we were there, there's a risk of Mad Cow or something.

I mean, my family and I can give blood to each other but we can't give blood to other people.

I think that's part of the reason I'm an organ donor.

What a wonderful story. The great part is thinking about all the hundreds of people these guys have helped, or even saved over the years!

That's amazing! I just can't donate blood, i'm so prone to fainting/feeling sick when it comes to stuff like that.

It's so great to hear something positive for a change!

Blood donation is such a great thing to do if a person can do it.

Each pint of blood can potentially help up to 3 people! Within 72hrs, your body makes more blood to replace the pint you gave away, but the blood banks don't let you donate again for at least 8 weeks. If you give blood every 8 weeks, it would take you a little over 53 years to donate 40 gallons! That man is super dedicated.

I always felt like I had more energy after donating (not necessarily the same day, but over the next couple days) and I liked to think it was because of the "new blood" that was circulating in me. lol I miss donating!
