Teachers Comments Caught on Tape

Has your child ever come home from school and told you something the teacher said and your left to wonder if it's true?

I saw this on my local news. I was shocked at what was said . This lady was down right mean..... Just be warned that if you hear the audio tape...it will not be nice.

I still don't know what she was thinking when she said those things. I really have to watch what I say in my line of work...and trust me...I have bitten my tounge , my lips and the inside of my mouth just to keep from saying mean and hurtful things...I'd be FIRED!..in a heartbeat.

Teacher's Comments
Caught On Tape

HOUSTON - Has your child ever come home from school and told you something the teacher said and your left to wonder if it's true?
Michael and Jessica Garza found themselves in that situation so they decided to put a tape recorder in their 8-year-old son's pocket.

Second grader Michael Garza isn't over weight but he said his reading teacher thinks he could lose a few pounds.
"She calls me fat," Michael said.

Michael's reading teacher is Savonya Depland Haston. In a meeting Michael's parents say she denied calling the 8-year-old fat.
"He says that you called him fat so why is he telling me that," Michael Garza Sr. said.
"She said I'm an adult and I would never call your child fat and that was the end of that," Jessica Garza said.

But it wasn't.

Michael's parents said their son then told them how the reading teacher would make him and other students do push ups and squating excercises as punishment.
"I need to know for myself what's going on," Jessica Garza said.

The same day they complained to the principal about the teacher's alleged form of discipline the couple said they took matters
into their own hands.
"We send him to school with a tape recorder or something recording all day long and we'll see what she is really saying to him and what he is really doing in class," Michael Garza Sr. said.

Boy did they get an earful.

On the tape here's what the reading teacher says to Michael after he calls her mam.
"I'm not your mam cause if I owned you and you were my slave, I would beat you down."

"Here's an adult telling my child no you can not call me mam a form of respect, I don't understand what was the purpose of that and why she would say something like that to an 8-year-old child," Jessica Garza said.

The teacher had apparently been told that day Michael's parents and at least two other parents had complained to the principal
about her.
On the audio tape, you hear her accusing the complaining parents of lying and violating her civil rights.

"I have rights too so when you lie on me I have the right to an attorney I have the right to file charges against you and your parents. I have the right to take you straight up to the Grand jury and the federal government and file charges against your parents and garnish whatever wages are in your houses that's the law," Haston is heard saying on the tape.

The teacher has no problem telling little Michael Garza how she feels about him.
"Why did you lie on me because you don't like me? I don't like you either," Haston is heard saying on the tape.

After FOX 26 Investigates contacted Haston and Sandra Gaw, the Principal at Dechaumes Elementary, a Houston ISD spokesperson stepped in. That spokesperson told us the principal was unable to decipher what was on the tape.
FOX 26 Investigates gave the principal and the spokesperson a copy of the tape we had enhanced by removing some of the background noise. Then the principal sent us this prepared statement.

"After listening to a more audible, though still hard to decipher version of the recording, I immediately removed the teacher from the classroom and reassigned her while the investigative process continues forward. There appear to be comments on the tape allegedly made by the teacher that were unacceptable. we await the results of the investigation," said Sandra Gaw.

Mrs. Haston didn't repond to our request seeking her comment.

Um: "your" is used as possessive.
"You're" is a contraction for you are.

For a news source, they might want to check their spelling.

Teachers should not be saying/doing things like that to children.

On this point of law, isn't it against police that you have rights against being wiretapped, but not by randoms ?

What a horrific person, I can't believe that she is allowed to be around children !

Yea i think it's illegal to record without consent by the person, but still --- that is disgusting! What a horrible experience for the students. I hate how it seems like the school is took their sweet time in removing her from the classroom.

If you think that is bad....you should read some of the grammar the Houston Chronicle reporters use. Sheeesh...to say the least.

There shouldn't have been no reassignment.

that woman should have been fired with no unemployment money to follow. She is a teacher who is suppose to prepare students of today to be leaders of tommorrow!

This woman is sick and delusional. Hope she gets all that is coming to her.

all the more reason to trust in home schooling, idiots like that make it hard for children to get a proper education!

Fail

I saw this report last night and was so blown away by it, I wanted to post it, but it wasn't online yet.

I find this woman--her comments to a class of second graders (that whole rant about her rights, calling kids who are telling the truth "liars"...) and to this kid in particular--revolting. She's a bully who's bullying second-graders--what a coward! I hope all the parents get together and sue her ass for whatever they can sue her (and I'm normally not big on suing).

It is only illegal in some states. It is a matter of state law, not federal law. Anyway, I don't think a small point like that would ever let this woman keep her job as a teacher. No parents will allow their child to be taught by her, no administrator will want to hire her, etc.

She seriously sounds psychotic. I wonder if she has some sort of mental disorder?? I can't see why someone would want to do any of that, even to a kid they didn't like! It's insane!
