Both babies and animals are helpless when trapped inside a vehicle. It is the adult's responsibility to make sure that they are safe and protected. |

If she stopped to get doughnuts that morning, did she take the baby out and take her in the store and then forget her, had she already forgotten her or did she purposely (as on other occasions) leave her in the car while she bought the doughnuts? |

She left her house and realized it was too early to take the baby to the sitter, so she went to get doughnuts, leaving the baby in the car, then forgot and just went straight to work.

That's true but when she bought the doughnuts before going to school, the baby was in the car, correct? From what I understood, because it was too early to drop her off at the sitter's, she'd run her errand first, then drop her off (which, obviously, never happened). So, did she take the baby into the store with her? I don't think she did, as evidenced by the other times she left her kids in cars (by her own admission). At that point, then, the baby was already forgotten in her mind. |

Can I just say that leaving a child(ren), a baby, in the car alone purposefully is negligent. I don't care how quick you're going to be, take them. PERIOD. The only reason why a parent wouldn't is because it's too much trouble for whatever reason. The #1 reason I hear, they're sleeping. Oh well. Wake em up or do it another time. YES, it takes effort to take them out of the car and into the store and then put them back into the car seat. So! Do it.
I don't know about anybody else, but I remember this being a big issue when I was growing up. Seemed like you saw children alone in cars all the time. Parents would even tell their kids to stay low, hide so people couldn't see them. |

and going back to the case on Oprah, i'm willing to bet that when she went to pick up the donuts, she purposely left her daughter in the car (because it was just a minute or two) and that's how she ended up forgetting her. i mean, i can see that after picking up the donuts and getting back in the car, that's when she forgot her daughter was there and she went on autopilot to go to the school. on the show she claims that her purposely leaving her daughter in the car for a few minutes on previous occasions was "completely unrelated" from the day she forgot her daughter in the car, but i disagree. i mean, parents sometimes leave children in cars "for just a minute" and once they're inside store they somehow get distracted (they run into a friend, they get a phone call, etc) and they forget about the kids that way. |

^^I think I agree with that Sweetneet. I still have a real problem with this incident, due to the fact that she was warned and left her in the car at the doughnut shop. I watched the Oprah show until I couldn't stand listening to her and turned it off. It seemed to be all about "her". IDK, if she had never left her baby in the car, I might feel differently.

I'm a mother of 3 and how in the heck can you forget about your child in the back seat in a car seat?

Perhaps instead of a sensor in the carseat they could have a babycam that slips over the back of the front seat and connects to a monitor by the dashboard, like you often see for GPS systems so you can always have an eye on the carseat. it would make forgetting about the baby much harder.

Stating that there should be changes made to cars is shifting the blame and responsibility away from the parent. Cars have been around since the early
20th century. How many parents have left and forgotten their child for an ENTIRE day as opposed to the number of people who drive or have driven cars? There was nothing wrong with her car. |

I know others have said the same, but this is not the responsibility of any product to fix. Mothers have had children for thousands of years and have managed not to leave them behind (in cars, wagons and caves) despite distractions far greater than donuts.
To have a child is to accept the greatest responsibility that exists in the world. In return, there are the greatest rewards possible. This infant died a terrible death. One might say this mother has suffered enough, but it is less than reassuring to hear her shift the blame and go on to have another child immediately after. It's wonderful when products are designed that make it so innocents are protected from the consequences of irresponsibility, and kudos to those products that do this, but it then shifts legal responsibility to those carrying the products which is not fair, but the way our system is currently constructed. I'd love to see a world in which we all have more rights - but when are we going to start accepting the responsibilities that come with them? (end of rant) |
