Default Montauk Monster—What is it?

Photos of this strange creature that washed up on a beach in Montauk started showing up last week. There has been a lot of speculation as to what it could be.

Maybe. Although the fact that it was found not far from Plum Island Animal Disease Center makes me wonder. The rumors about that place are legendary.

if its real, its just some sort of animal, genetic mutation or not. I hate when people automatically have to call it a "monster"! its just an animal. why must everything be so dramatic? if its real, it would be fascinating to find out what it was. my guess is that its a hoax because if I found it, I would have contacted animal control or some university to come and pick it up and do a necropsy. who would just walk away from this?

^^^ Because "Animal Found on Beach" just isn't newsworthy!

I'll be anxious to see what it is too. But calling it a monster gives it such a bad rep, doesn't it? Lots of things look more dangerous than they are (and vice versa!).
