(Oct. 6) - A 12-year-old Florida boy accidentally ran over his mother and killed her in an accident over the weekend.

Kissimmee authorities said Julian Matta had been sitting in the driver's seat of his family's van on Saturday when he asked his mother if he could put the vehicle in gear, according to a report by Orlando's WESH.

Witnesses said 34-year-old Mayra Leader gave her son permission, but that right afterward the car suddenly went in reverse.

Leader, trapped between the open driver's door and the driver's seat, was pinned under the vehicle when it eventually slammed into a neighbor's parked car.

Leader died after being taken to the Osceola Regional Medical Center later that day.

Police: 12-Year-Old Boy Runs Over Mom In Driveway

Witnesses: Boy Asked Mom's Permission To Start Car

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- A woman was killed Saturday afternoon when she was dragged under a car driven by her son.

Kissimmee police said the incident happened at about 4:30 p.m. at Massy Court in Bordeaux Road.

Crash investigator Frederick Hall said 12-year-old Julian Matta was sitting in the driver's seat of a 2008 Dodge van in the driveway of 810 Massy Court when he asked his mother's permission to put the car in gear. Another woman, identified as 58-year-old Nayda Cruz, was sitting in the van's passenger seat.

Witnesses said the mother, identified as 34-year-old Mayra Leader, gave the boy permission. That's when the van suddenly traveled in reverse, causing Leader to become trapped between the open driver's door and the driver's seat.

Officials said the van dragged Leader into the roadway and crashed into the rear of neighbor's parked car. As a result of the collision, the parked car was pushed forward toward the garage door of the neighbor's house.

Leader died at the Osceola Regional Medical Center Saturday night.

Police are investigating the crash.

how sad! that boy must be riddled with guilt :(

i went to church with a family that this happened to. the mom and 2 sons were at the dentist and her 18yr old son and her 12yr old son went out to get the van [it was raining] their mom was standing outside the office under the awning waiting for the oldest to bring the car up. the younger brother begged to move it, so the older agreed. he slammed on the gas and not the break when he got up to the office and ran over his mom and plowed into the office building.

it was so sad, she left behind 6 children and her husband was in africa at the time on a missionary trip, so he hadn't seen her in about a month and then she was gone... :(

vehicles can be so dangerous...and it so easily could have been avoided
