It is very common for companies to adjust their advertising efforts depending on the target market. In Caucasian areas, you will see white folks pushing products, in African-American areas, you'll see a black family pushing the favorable car insurance.

A pathetically bad PS job however, is something entirely different.

oh c'mon, you can barely tell that the hand left in the pic is dark, it looks tanned on either body, white or black, and nothing major... I imagined it much worse... I think the white man's angle is off, they should have done a better job on that, it dosen't look very natural how his head is turned when his body is straight... (or the black man's body) But seriously, if I didn't read this thread, I wouldn't have noticed that they photoshopped it. Big deal, asian, black, white, red, yellow... who cares...

I'm sure they have their reasons for the switch (marketing wise) but the photoshop fail is pretty embarrassing.

Back when I was in college, we took an advertising class where a situation like this had happened. I can't remember exactly what company (I think it was a school?) had done it, but they had taken a guy in a crowd at a football game and changed his head to caucasian, and the original body remained un photoshopped. I'll try to see if I can find the link.. That was years ago, I can't believe they are STILL doing this!

Hilariously bad photoshop aside, I found this article very disturbing. Why would the company go out of its way to remove the black man from the advertisement?

What do you think?
Because, like they explained, they were modifying the ad to target a particular audience. Companies do this all the time on print and TV ads. They use actors and models that better represent the people they think are more likely to buy the product.

Actually the US Fed Reserve is guilty of this retro-tokenism.

If you compare the current 1998 and 2009 two-dollar bills, you can see that they've turned one person a bit darker....
