I read an analysis of police stats once that shocked me. The researchers concluded that the most dangerous place for a woman was to be the sole female in a group of men who felt like they had a "group bond" -- fans of a particular sports team, working for the same company, members of the same fraternal group, etc. It was chilling, and it made me wary of being alone with groups of men.

I think individuals will do things in groups that they wouldn't do by themselves.
I saw two disturbing bullying videos in the last couple of weeks: the first was of boys saying horrible things to a bus monitor, and the other, from Europe, was of a girl slapping and hitting a girl who was sitting on the curb minding her own business. Even though the latter case involved a single girl perpetrating the violence, she was surrounded by other girls who were giggling and showing their approval. I can't say for sure, but I doubt these people would have acted like this were it just themselves and their victims.
