Loyal dog guards owner for weeks after death

GREELEY, Colorado (AP) -- A dog stood guard over her owner's body for up to six weeks after the man committed suicide on the remote northeastern Colorado plains, authorities said.

Sara Baysinger of La Salle, Colorado, and her 2-year-old son, Lane, reunite with their German shepherd, Cash.

The body of 25-year-old Jake Baysinger of La Salle, Colorado, was found Sunday on the Pawnee National Grasslands about 75 miles northeast of Denver, Colorado. Cash, his German shepherd, was found beside him, thin and dehydrated but still alive. The dog had apparently survived by eating mice and rabbits, authorities said.

The Weld County coroner ruled Baysinger's death a suicide. The cause of death wasn't immediately determined but authorities found a gun nearby, the coroner's office said Tuesday.

"At least we know it's over now," said Baysinger's wife, Sara. "We'd been looking for my husband for six weeks, and this isn't how we wanted it to end. At least we can close this."

Baysinger was reported missing June 28. An extensive search failed to locate him, but Kip Konig, a rancher, saw the dog last weekend, went to investigate and discovered Baysinger's body and his pickup.

He said Cash kept running back to the pickup and jumping into the front seat.

"I got the sense she was trying to tell me where her master was," Konig said.

Cash was reunited Monday with Sara Baysinger and her 2-year-old son, Lane. She said her little boy is "very close to that dog" and happy to see her again.

Investigators said the dog probably kept coyotes away from the body.

Beautiful. Never underestimate the love of an animal.

Reminds me of Greyfriars Bobby.

Wow what a nice husband to leave his wife, his dog, and his CHILD... I know I'll probably get crap for this but that was so selfish.

Dogs are amazing companions. Their love truly knows no bounds.

My grandmother died a couple of years ago. In her last couple of weeks, her dog stayed by her side, refusing to leave for more than bathroom runs and eating every other day. After my grandmother's death, Cinnamon 'mourned' by sleeping in my grandmother's bed for a couple of months. It's amazing, the love of a dog.

I read this on the internet late last night and balled my eyes out..I'm very deeply touched by the loyalty, selflessness & unconditional love of this beautiful animal. So sad for the man's family (of course including Cash). The poor dog..Why did this man bring poor Cash with him if he was going to commit suicide? That's what my DH wanted to know..Poor doggy, wife & baby! I'm glad Cash is now reunited w/ his other 2 family members.

Here comes the crap....have you ever known someone who committed suicide? Or attempted it yourself? And I don't mean in the silly "pay attention to ME!!!" kind of way, I mean "the all-hope-is-gone-I can't-live-with-this-pain-anymore" way. You don't know this man or what he was going through so you have no right to judge him or call him names IMO. Anyway this post isn't about suicide, it's about the loyalty of a good dog.

I was reading this earlier today and I just think the man was very selfish for taking his dog with him. The dog could have died. Yet he stayed loyal. No offense, but that man did not deserve this dog's loyalty. He also left his wife and young child behind..
