Yeah they can. That is what the other couples did when he refused to marry them. They just went elsewhere and chose not to pursue legal action.

I am sure that most people can go elsewhere to get married, but to me it is about equal access to services. What about the people who CAN'T go somewhere else for whatever reason? I firmly believe that if a person cannot fulfill the obligations of their job and follow the LAW instead of their own twisted moral (or immoral) compass, then they should not hold a position that allows them to decide important issues for other people.

I don't understand people who think this way. Race is so irrelevent when it comes right down to it... we are all part of the human race.

Aww, I'm so sorry you had to go through that, and I know your son will love you! That is so sad about your family.

I'd take this a step farther and point out that MOST people in the South and America as a whole do not feel this way (especially people with enough education to have a lot of influence). Thankfully, I guess, this guy - with his level of education and influence - sounds like an extreme and an anomaly. And I think that's important to remember, although it doesn't make his actions any less insulting and ignern't.

And has been for centuries.

Which is why I wonder what is the real story here?

It is extremely unlikely that anybody who has been authorized to perform marriages in New Orleans for more than fifteeen minutes will have had his very first ever "interracial couple" come in last week.

And it is also unlikely that if he had been making that speech to every couple that did come in, it would be only this couple last week who would remark on the event.

So is this assclown hoping to get a reality show or something?

Doesn't he have a kid or a grandkid or something he can hide in a cabinet while he launches a hot air balloon, like normal people?
Took the words out of my mouth. This seems really odd.

I have to say, if I were in this couple's shoes, I would almost be glad the bigot had spoken up so that I wouldn't accidentally have been married by a raging @#$@. Who wants those kind of vibes around during your wedding day?

Yeah, discrimination based on race is pretty serious - he certainly should be forced to step down and hopefully will lose his license/bar membership.

I don't know why this loser says both racial groups would not accept a mixed child, when it's clearly his ignorant stance. He's not protecting the children. Who's this idiot kidding? He needs to quit acting like some sort of hero.

Uh, because they are racists.

I disagree. I don't think he is an anomaly at all. The difference is that he is in a position that would result in more exposure of his beliefs. Miscegenation hasn't been legal for that many years in this country. Many people feel the same way that he does.

And I'm not surprised by his attitudes about mixed race children. Even Richard Nixon had disparaging comments to make, saying that mixed race children should be aborted. I will say though that many people DO feel that children of mixed race heritage will have a hard time settling into an identity.
