This is the first thing that caught my attention, too. Hello, throwback. And I believe that if people are unable to uphold the LAW, they have no business practicing their chosen profession, whether they are a Justice of the Peace, other government/public employee, a doctor or a pharmacist. There are many things that others disagree with, but in the eyes of the law people ought to have equal access to services.

People like this always blame their attitudes on others, but acceptance begins at home. Each of us can only control ourselves, our own attitudes and the things we bring to society. If everyone took a look inside instead of blaming a "racist society", this country would go further towards acceptance.

Angry
I am astonished by this article. I am a resident of south Louisiana, and I know this man and his family personally. I am outraged by him. This is my question... What if his only son came to him and asked him to marry him and a black lady? Would he disown his only child for the choice of his wife? What if him and this lady had children together? Would he disown his grandchild? Actually, let me answer my own question here... I am sure that Mr. Bardwell has already instilled his racist views in his son, and he probably feels the same way as his father on this matter. That is what makes me so angry. Don't parents realize that stopping racisim is up to them. If you raise your children not to judge a person for the color of their skin, racisim will stop. It is that simple. Why don't people get that??

Not everyone in Louisiana feels the way this man does. Most of us are not ignorant, backward, rednecks. It is people like him who give me and the rest of the nice people in Louisiana a horrible name. I am ashamed of him, and he should be ashamed of himself.

"I try to treat everyone equally," he said.

Try? Equally? But he just said he doesn't treat everyone and couples equally.

Another self-deluded bigot.

Try harder.

I didn't flinch when I read the story. However, I started laughing uncontrollably when I heard that he said he isn't racist because he has piles of black friends and he even lets them use his bathroom. Gee...thanks!

The statement and sentiment behind it is so ludicrous and off base that I find it downright comical.

What a backwards man!

I hope people don't think everyone in Louisiana holds these views; we do not!

Exactly!!! I cannot believe this. This is two thousand fu**ing nine! Come on now. I am glad I did not go to him to get married... He wouldn't like to see a Mexican marrying a Korean

I think these people are very capable of choosing who they want to marry. The narrow minded views of others are not required.

What's crazy about this is how upset people are... but we're still not letting homosexual couples get married. Does anyone else see the hypocrisy?

As a person living in the South, I am shocked by this. I know a TON of interracial couples. I was in an interracial relationship for a very long time and had no issues. This guy is a moron.

This is crazy, but unfortunately in some of the smaller areas of the south people still harbor ill feelings about the idea of interracial couples. If he feels this way, I cannot believe he's in this business. I don't at all condone his feelings, but if chooses to believe that, he needs to go find a different career. And that bathroom comment said EXACTLY how he felt.

LOL A good chunk of Louisiana is populated by individuals whose pedigree includes ancestors from two or more continents.

And has been for centuries.

Which is why I wonder what is the real story here?

It is extremely unlikely that anybody who has been authorized to perform marriages in New Orleans for more than fifteeen minutes will have had his very first ever "interracial couple" come in last week.

And it is also unlikely that if he had been making that speech to every couple that did come in, it would be only this couple last week who would remark on the event.

So is this assclown hoping to get a reality show or something?

Doesn't he have a kid or a grandkid or something he can hide in a cabinet while he launches a hot air balloon, like normal people?

They said he has done this before. The difference was that the other couples just went to someone else and chose not to make an issue out of it.

Not really. I personally think there is a big difference between the two issues.
