"CINCINNATI -- The U.S. Secret Service is investigating a tweet from a high school girl...Alyssa Douglas of Clarksville, Ohio, about 40 miles northeast of here, sent a tweet Thursday night: "Someone needs to assassinate Obama … like ASAP" with a hashtag "#DieYouPieceofSh*t."

It chills me that someone so young would wish such blatant hate on another person, so publicly. So she disagrees with his politics and whatnot I still think it's way unnecessary to wish death on anyone.

Where is her common sense? Teens need to be more careful of what they put on the internet. I'm guessing she's gonna have a pretty bad time recovering from this incident....

Common sense is no longer common! It's that simple, I hope the scare encourages her and others to make wiser decisions, but I expect her parents will give a BS statement and some network will hold her up as a young person who made a mistake and is being manhandled by the big bad gov.

oy . . . before this gets bad, please remember not to make any political comments

She's young, a kid, and clearly doesn't realize that the gov't perceives that as a threat. I can see lots of kids saying dumb s&^t like this and needing to get scared straight. Surely she doesn't truly want him or any one else executed. . . I have to hope.
I'd like to be a fly on that wall hearing the thunder come down on her about this. . .

People make threats online all the time, I don't think a lot of people/kids know that it's a whole 'nother story when it involves a gov't official of any kind. Hopefully they do now!!

To me the scary thing is that she is probably still of the age where comments like this are coming from her PARENTS. Kids that young are generally not all that interested in politics, and when they are interested they are usually quite well-educated in civics and the process and tend to be far more idealistic about the process more than the individual candidates. Hateful comments like these (usually) come from a position of ignorance - regardless of political affiliation, and at the age of 16 I have to believe she's been hearing this sort of thing from the adults in her life. The hashtag indicates that this isn't some political opinion that she doesn't realize it is illegal and inappropriate to express publicly; it is mindless hate.

It is really too bad, IMO, that the adults who taught her this hate and rage cannot be investigated instead. They are the dangerous ones, passing on their hate to another generation. As the song lyrics go, "You've got to be carefully taught."

It is unnecessary, but people have been killing each other over politics for thousands of years. Just a few days ago in Canada an attempt was made on the life of a female politician. For every comment like this there are probably a few hundred thousand people who share the sentiment but aren't foolish enough to post it online. The same hatred is felt for politicians with different views, too. Politics is a hateful business and that won't change.

It amazes me that some of today's younger people think that they can post anything they want on the internet and there will be no consequences. We went through this with my stepson (not to this extreme degree), but he posted some things on his Facebook. We happened to find out through a third party. He could not understand why we were so angry. His words were something like, "But it's just a Facebook post." He just didn't get it. And I am seeing an entire generation that just doesn't get it. They seem to see the internet as a faceless and nameless entity that just absorbs words.

That's what I was saying. . . they don't get it. Hopefully she was scared straight and she and none of her friends make this mistake again.
Funny thing is if people that bully or posts these threats had the tables turned - like if others were saying this about her I'm sure she'd take it a LOT more serious!

I also hope that someone teaches her that it isn't just things like this, but that EVERYTHING she posts online could potentially be read/seen by people shoe didn't expect. My kids aren't even old enough for social media or their own email accounts and I still warn them each time something like this is in the news that they have to assume that anything they post online could potentially be read by anyone. In other words, don't ever post anything anywhere that you would be ashamed for your parents or teachers or employers to see!

The kids these days definitely don't get it for the most part. I also hope that she was scared straight, and will think a little more before she posts something next time. If the tables were turned like you said, it would be a different story for sure.

That's a great lesson to teach your kids. It's too bad that more parents don't take the pro-active approach to try and stop stuff like that before it happens.

Someone actually did say that about her. (After she posted hers, someone else tweeted what she just said, but put in her name instead of Obama's. )

Umm . . .I don't think I have much else to add on this, since you ladies summed it all up so perfectly. I agree with all of you.

It's not just kids. The news is full of stories about professional adults getting fired or suspended or arrested for things they post.

I've got a thread here on those stories here that nobody pays attention to.

(' professional adults ' meaning adults in professional jobs/positions.)

You are sooo right. But, the biggest difference I see is that younger people (teens, pre-teens) are growing up with social media. The idea that the internet is a safe place to say whatever they want is implanted in their minds at a young age, so they do not understand why they are not free to use the internet as a sounding board for both good and bad.

Oh yes, I absolutely agree. Lots of adults do the same stuff, and don't even think twice til they get caught or called out on whatever they posted. It's sad. I am one of those who always tries to think about what I'm going to say and how it will affect others before I say it or post it. It's a shame that common sense has really gone by the wayside with a lot of people these days.
