Can't believe it's not banned already!! so much more dangerous than holding a phone to your ear while driving, which has been banned for ages!!!
texting means you actually LOOKING at the phone and not the road!!!!!!!!

It has already become a law in VA as well (except to get pulled over for it, you have to be doing something else as well ex. speeding)

I'm surprised they're trying to regulate this at a federal level. Seems like the sort of thing states should be handling (as some already have).

I'm surprised they havent banned it across the country. In Australia, if you're caught texting or using a phone without a hands free, you're smacked with a fine. I know a colleague's boyfriend was fined for using his phone. He was parked outside a store waiting for my colleague and the keys were inside the ignition but the engine wasnt running, yet he was still fined.

I admit, I'm guilty of texting while driving. It's not like I've been socializing with friends and texting on the highway, but I have answered texts while driving if they are from the babysitter, etc. It really is dangerous and should be illegal. Unfortunately, it will likely not be enforced. I would think it would be very difficult for a law enforcement officer to determine if someone is texting while driving.

Why do you do that? Honestly...I think that calling the babysitter rather than texting her would be much safter to do while driving. Or even safer? Pull over. I'm not trying to be mean, but it's SUCH a dangerous thing to do and I don't think there is any reason to ever do that while driving. I hope you don't do that with your children in the car....

I agree. Texting is so much more dangerous than talking on the phone while driving. I've done this, but not too often. We still don't have that kind of ban here in Indonesia.

When I get a text, I usually ignore it if I'm driving. I just can't be bothered rummaging through my purse for my phone when I'm behind the wheels

I am amazed that there even has to be a law. It's just common sense not to text while driving, IMO.

And those of you who have admitted to texting while driving frankly ought to be ashamed of yourselves. It's NEVER OK to take your attention away from the task at hand--DRIVING YOUR CAR---even for a moment.

That's my thinking. The driver is responsible for maintaining control of the vehicle. If you run into something, does it really matter if you were doing your nails, makeup, eating a burrito, texting, scratching your (insert body part here), digging in your bag, smacking the kid in the back seat, or whatever else?

It's about time! Earlier this year here in Colorado, a little girl was run over and killed on her bike by some idiot trying to text while driving.

I'll never understand why people feel the need to text while driving. It's so dangerous and stupid!

I know that talking on your phone while driving has been outlawed in GA, but I've also heard that if you have an accident, the cops will automatically check your phone to see if you were texting or talking on the phone when it happened and fine you if you were. Not sure whether that is true or not....or even particularly enforceable since you can easily delete call and text logs. In any case, if it is true, here's to safer roads in GA! (Hopefully)

There is no hidden innuendo about drinking and driving with that emoticon either, I promise!!! lol!
