Default Fate of Titanic, Its Treasures in US Judge's Hands
U.S. District Judge Rebecca Beach Smith is expected to rule within weeks that the salvaged items must remain together and accessible to the public.

This ruling would prevent the items going on the auction block.

I really wish they would leave this stuff on the bottom of the ocean or put it in museums. It seems so wrong for someone to be making piles of money auctioning this stuff off when the only reason its so famous is because so many people died tragically.

I think the judge's decision is going to be a good one.

Those things should be preserved and protected.

I don't think they should be salvaged and auctioned off to private individuals. I believe that the wreck and all of items contained within it, should be left where they are for eternity as it is a resting place for many souls....leave it alone.

I think they would be protected from further damage in a museum.

People would be educated about the ship and what happened.

Those who were lost will be remembered.

I think there's a big difference between this and using pieces of the wreckage to make watches.

^ True, the industry that surrounds selling bits off the Titanic is huge - I know a young fellow that purchased a lump of coal from the Titanic via eBay.....yeah right it came from the Titanic.

Personally I feel it is almost akin to desecration of graves to salvage parts. I shouldn't think that way as I think it is exciting when new things are discovered in Egyptian Tombs, but I probably think like that because the Titanic tragedy is still too recent (if you can call nearly 100 years ago recent)....it's a double edged sword really.

According to this article:

http://www.express.co.uk/posts/view/...ule-on-Titanic

The ruling applies to artifacts recently salvaged from the Titanic.

But lawyers are pushing Congress to make the Titanic a “living memorial” to the 1,522 people who perished when it sank in 1912. Such a law would also stop salvaging.

Read the Ballard book on the Titanic. It's a grave site, leave it alone.

That would be an excellent decision.

I agree.

I think the artifacts in question should be protected.

I also think the wreck should be protected.

I think they've gotten all they needed from the ship and anything else would be a scavenger job.

It shouldn't get to the point where the explorers turn into vultures.

I equate the Titanic with Egyptian tombs. The items should be preserved and protected in museums.

It's only graverobbing if the items were sold for someone's personal use.

I don't know what I would consider "too soon." I guess The Holocaust.

(An exception would be made if the survivors/relatives of the survivors gave their permission for the item to be displayed.)
