Now that it's a legal situation, they are probably being told by their airline, their union, and their attorneys not to say anymore than the minimum. Frankly, I was surprised the first officer made that statement. He said they can go a long time without realizing they aren't in contact with ATC. Maybe he and the captain can be oblivious for over an hour, but virtually every other pilot will not--they'll realize something is off and needs correcting long before that. Losing situational awareness is dangerous and should not happen.

On this note, it could have been disasterous if it had been determined a hijack and they had to prove they were in control. If it had been much longer, I hate to think about it since they had the fighter jets ready.
Touches on what I was wondering.
Was anything on the voice recorder staged?
Did they delay any access so the thirty minute loop was recorded over.

These pilots endangered so many - Why didn't anyone go up to the cockpit and alert the pilots sooner? Did they mention anything about the Marshall in the plane? Did they do anything?

I'm sorry but I have to trust my pilot. They are proving themselves to not be trustworthy. As long as these guys have a job with NW, I would never fly NW.
I'm with you on this. I'm normally not really reactionary to things like this, but in this case, this is way too far over the line. And if NW is employing these guys, who else are they employing that they find acceptable but that we may not?

I personally have had very bad experience with Northwest; Their online tracking system told me that they had lost a live animal I was shipping! And it was clearly not a matter of someone entering one wrong message; there was a string of around 5 messages detailing that the animal was lost. It was not lost, and arrived at it's destination fine, and NW had no explanation except a shrug of their shoulders!! unacceptable.

The whole timeline will be interesting. I'm certain they are interviewing the cabin crew. Not every flight has an air marshal on board. If this flight did, it hasn't been mentioned.

It seems the pilots claim they were distracted over a new flight-scheduling system.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?p...d=aU2YEyTw7v0I

What I find interesting, is this sentence in the article:
"...The pilots also used their personal laptops during the discussion, the NTSB said in a statement today."

The airlines don't allow for laptops and other electronics to be used while on the plane during takeoff and landing. Not only that, but the altitude makes it difficult to get a good Wifi signal anyway.

So...why would they need to use their laptops? To glance at their upcoming flight schedule? Or to access the internet?

It would be interesting to check out the history and cache on the laptop, to see if they tried to access info via WiFi...such as the amount of data that can be recorded via the flight recorder on their particular plane. Interesting...no?

OK, so the pilots are saying they were so involved with the crew scheduling on their laptops that they didn't hear anyone trying to contact them and completely forgot that it was time to descend and land the plane? These guys both have many years of airline flying and it blows my mind that they forgot they are in the cockpit to fly the plane.

It sounds as if Delta may fire them both.

If they were connected to WIFI, the aircraft was equipped with a satellite wifi system (like gogo). IF they were on their laptops, the info may have been on saved documents. It's hard to believe, though, that they were both that distracted. I guess neither were planning to jump on that last flight to commute home or he would've been counting the minutes.

THEY SHOULD. Many lives were in their hands and they could have easily been in a disastrous situation because of their stupidity! I do not feel bad for them at all. I hope their asses get a swift kick to the curb.

They're reporting the FAA has revoked their pilot licenses.

I'm not buying the laptop story either, but they should be able to check the history, right? To see if they really were on their computers and on what sites? Still think they fell asleep or were doing something else.

Without their licenses, they are effectively out of their airline careers, as they should be.
