Vegas, you are ridiculous! He is the victim of a messed-up law! Do you think homosexuals in steady long-term relationships should be thrown in jail too? If you're talking strictly about the law and its applications, then they do apply as much to a married couple as they do to kids, so no apples and oranges there. I'm just baffled that you could look at this case and conclude that he got what he deserved.

The law was obviously not clear enough if they didn't know it. I'm pretty sure being 2 years apart, and both minors, they didn't realize he would get 10 years. The problem with the law is, that if they were to have had intercourse, it would have only been a misdemeanor. Due to them just engaging in CONSENSUAL oral sex, he received a felony charge. Now PLEASE tell me that is not a screwed up law.

Vegas...so by your arguments, we should sit idly by and just be ok with the fact that a law is a law. Tell the to Mr King and all the African Americans who stood up against the laws and made our government give equal rights to blacks (along with every other race/nationality), or tell that to Miss Anthony who felt women deserved the same rights as men. It was illegal for you to vote at one point. Was that ok? I mean, it was a law...right?
This is what it boils down to, and this is why we're upset about it. First of all, it's not the government's job to legislate in my bedroom. If I want to be blindfolded and have a troupe of circus midgets perform S&M on me while I sodomize a willing partner during a videotaped session, then I should have every right to do that. Secondly, are we arguing that he broke a law? No. We realize that he broke a law, but given the circumstances (2 willing partners. Both were in a reasonable age of each other), we think the law is dumb...and apparently so do others since it's been amended since. Third, the sentence was certainly uncalled for. 10 years? He didn't rape her, he didn't use force, he didn't hurt her, yet he's getting 10 years. Let me ask you this...after doing some research, I've found that it's illegal to have sex in Nevada without a condom. Did you know that? Do you follow that law? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say at some point in your residence in the great state of Nevada, you've broken that law. Now, do you think it's ok if you get prosecuted for that? Are you gonna sit there in your handcuffs saying "a law's a law"?? |

That's crazy for a little licky licky. Molesters, rapists, involuntary manslaughterists (sp?) and repeat DWI offenders don't even get that kind of sentence. Geeeez!!!

It is an unspeakable tragedy.
It appears that from the beginning, there was a desire on the part of some local officials to "make an example." The chances that the young man will survive ten years in a Georgia prison are not good. I hope that those who pray will keep him in theirs. |

I agree with Charles. Consenting acts are just that. Certain places in the world say anal is illegal. Some people personally enjoy a little anal action and if they want to do it in the privacy of their homes then so be it! 10 years is too harsh for a 17 yo. There was no harm to either participant. Maybe because I am a lawless chica and I have no morals? lol I think I have a lot of common sense, but I ain't no bible law banger.

Well, I do think there need to be laws to protect minors, but in this case, I don't think it applies. There's absolutely nothing wrong with a 17 year old being with a 15 year old, and let's face reality, that's the age when sexual experimentation begins.
When you think about it, the law doesn't even make sense. Because they were less than 3 years apart in age it's against the law. So..if she was 13 and he 17, it would have been ok? |

I think a lot of people are misinterpreting Vegas Long Legs posts. To me the gist of her post is that if you are unhappy with something then do something about it. I live in Property Tax Hell - so I joined a group for taxpayer's alliance. I was not happy with the curriculum choices at our local elementary school so I got on a curriculum committee for the school board. If you don't live in GA I doubt if there is anything you can do - but complaining doesn't do much.
Also, I'm wondering how many people here are parents? Believe it or not, it completely changes your perspective on many things. I am a mother of 2 boys and consider their sexual education me and my DH's responsibilty - not the school system's.

WTH?!?
I think that this sentencing is a bit extreme. Many people who commit more severe crimes do not serve such a lengthy sentence. Both teens need to be educated about high risk behavior. The young man would have probably received less time if he knocked over a convenience store.

The sentencing was extreme, no doubt, but some responses are painting the situation as more innocent than it was. I watched the 20/20 special (If I get any facts wrong please correct me). This was a party where boys Genarlow's age and above brought two young girls (girls younger than them) into the hotel room. The girls were given alcohol and/or weed and the boys consumed as well. On the tape, one of the girls was clearly intoxicated.
Of course a ten year sentence is ridiculous, given the other crimes that pull much less time but this was far from a high school sweetheart situation. |

^ I don't think anyone is denying that, but it is pretty ridiculous. They were just being dumb kids. And the girl who went cock-happy with her mouth and got them all in trouble was sober, it seems.
