From Citizen's Daily Brief:

Breaking: Two DC Metro Trains Collide

June 22, 2009 by Betsy

CNN is reporting that two trains on the Washington, DC Metro have collided. CNN’s correspondent says that one train has been driven on top of the other and that he suspects it was a rear-end collision. CNN says people are trapped inside the trains. No confirmation yet, but it appears that the Red line in affected. It is rush hour in DC right now and the trains are running at peak capacity.

My thoughts are with them; I've taken the red line before when visiting DC, and it's always packed at that hour.

I just popped in to see if there was anything new on this. I have friends that still live in that area and take the train all the time to and from work. So, I am worrying about them so much right now. I am making calls.

We always took the red line when I lived in that area. This is so sad. I don't ever remember such a bad accident like this. You can literally see one train on top of another.

Gees, I have tons of friends in that area as I lived there. I hope there's not many casualties.

I just talked to my friend, he said it was the train in front of his. They were stalled for 30 mins when they came on and told the passengers that there was an emergency! He just moved there last week. So scary :(

It was on the part of the red line heading north into Maryland (and away from DC) and towards Glenmont. The latest reports are 6 dead and two of the injuries are life threatening so many families need our prayers tonight.

I was visiting my SIL in DC today when this happened.

I am so glad I decided not to take the metro. I am hoping and praying for the victims.

It's really tragic, the worst crash the DC Metro has had in four decades. As was mentioned, 6 are confirmed dead at this point although they were careful to say that the number could change as they make their way through all of the wreckage. The conductor of the train that was in motion has been confirmed dead.

My mom called on her way home from work because she couldn't remember whether we use the red line for commuting (we don't). The one small piece of good fortune, relatively speaking, is that both trains were inbound so they were relatively empty and not packed with commuters heading home from downtown. Of course that is cold comfort to those who are injured or who have lost loved ones, but it could have been even worse. My heart goes out to everyone involved and hopefully they'll be able to figure out what on Earth happened.

Here's a link to another article / video / photos etc:
http://news.ninemsn.com.au/world/828...-in-washington

"Six people were killed and at least 76 injured in a rush-hour collision between two Metrorail subway trains in the US capital, an official in Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty's office said.

"The mayor confirmed that there are six confirmed deaths, the largest fatality in Metro's four-decade history," communications officer Jack Pfeiffer said on Monday.
The crash occurred minutes after 5pm local time in northeast Washington during the city's Monday evening rush hour, when a subway train travelling on an outdoor track inexplicably smashed into another train that was stopped on the same track awaiting orders to proceed, officials from the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) said.
The female operator of the rear train was among those killed.
Fire Chief Dennis Rubin said rescue workers treated 76 people at the scene and sent some of them to local hospitals, six with critical injuries."

Just another update for you all - there are now confirmed 7 dead, 2 in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

I missed that train by just about 20 minutes... really really scary.
