Default Bikini wax ban becomes too hairy for officials
I couldn't help but laugh at this story...the headline really set me off.

Beauty salon owners in America have won their battle to overturn plans that would have banned bikini waxes.

The Cosmetology and Hairstyling Board had proposed the move after two women were hospitalised for infections following the procedure. One of them filed a lawsuit.

However, officials in the US state of New Jersey backed down in the face of protests from salon owners concerned about losing business ahead of the summer.

Officials said they believed that it was possible for the procedure, which involves ripping off excess hair from the body, to be carried out safely.

David Szuchman, New Jersey's consumer affairs director, said in a letter to the board that he would not support the ban.

"Many commenters have noted that the procedure can be safely performed.

"I, therefore, believe that there are alternate means to address any public health issues identified by the board," he wrote.

Salons in the New Jersey area reportedly offer the procedure for up to $60 (£40) and are preparing for their busiest time of the year as women prepare for the hot weather.

Dermatologists warn that it can be painful because it is carried out on sensitive areas of the body, sometimes resulting in skin irritation or rashes.

While it may have been a close shave for salon owners worried at the prospect of shedding customers, they argued that the ban should never have been considered.

Spa owner Linda Orsuto said: "It was an unnecessary issue.

"In New Jersey especially, where the government has been picking our pockets for so long, it was like: 'Just stay out of our pants, will you?'"

to be honest, there should be more laws surrounding the "procedure" put in place, but a ban is ridiculous. a lot of places use the wax for multiple customers and dip the sticks in and its an easy way to transfer bacteria. my salon dumps some on a paper plate first. it might be smart to have individual pods of wax for each person...

I agree! And would never go to a place that "double dips" the spa I was going to had individual pods for each waxing.

At the salon I go to, every person gets their own pot of wax and each stick is disposed of after application. It's not hard to be sanitary in performing a bikini wax.

If Illinois banned it, I'd just drive to Wisconsin.

Why ban it entirely?

Why not just shut down that particular place and then set up strict regulations for how it's done?

That's like shutting down all restaurants because two people have had food poisoning.

My place is very sanitary and pretty reasonably priced.

Sounds like some women let it grow out in the winter? Not me. Rain, sleet, snow or pregnant, its gone.

Me, too. (Well, not the pregnant part but you know what I mean.)

I never got the 'hairy legs during the winter' thing, either.
