Many families send their kids to see other family members or grandparents around that age via airline. Not everyone can afford to fly with their child to go back and forth. That should have been a quick and short flight where she was taken to her seat, made sure she was ok, and be escorted off the plane.

I have sat by many kids like this and actually flew with my sister when we were younger from Florida to Ohio - she was 12 and I was 10. At that time, my parents could walk us to the gate, and my grandparents were waiting at the gate when we arrived. I think times have changed, but technically there should be adult supervision the entire time - and the airlines attempt to pride themselves in that.

^^^ Totally agree, I think it can be done safely and think they should continue the practice.

2. Transport children/elderly/person w/ diasability that needs monitored/supervised or extra attention

They say they are the best airline to do this. I'm not saying I would put my child (which I have none) on an airline alone but if I was, from their marketing would chose Continental. This is a paid service. I'm sure children of divorce w/ parents that live far apart, this happens more often than we know.

It's the lack of responsibility on the airlines part--If I pay you for a service I expect you to follow through w/ due diligence.
I agree. There are some instances where kids have to travel and the parent can't always afford to go with them. Airlines are usually really good at escorting kids. This is a rare instance.

you took the words out of my mouth. Sorry but the parents need to place some blame on themselves as well. I have never understood why parents allow their young children to fly alone.

Wow that is crazy!

I know this happens often with animals, which is also why I don't ever fly unless my dog can fly in cabin with me.

I'm glad she's OK. It's a shame she was stuff at the Newark airport. In all my travels that is by far the worst airport EVER.

That kid should have never been placed in that situation by the parents in the first place. It's simply not a good idea to send a child traveling by themselves. If soneone can't afford to go with their child, then they can wait until they can afford it. My child's safety comes first even if it means missing out on some trips. The airline staff are not babysitters or nannies.
