Expert: Air France black boxes may never be found

FERNANDO DE NORONHA, Brazil (AP) — Military planes and ships struggled through high seas and heavy winds Wednesday and found more debris from an Air France jet, while an investigator said the black boxes may never be found in the depths of the Atlantic.
Rescue vessels from several nations were sailing toward the site to start the recovery as aviation experts tried to determine why the plane carrying 228 people from Rio de Janeiro to Paris on Sunday night ended up in the sea.
A 23-foot (seven-meter) chunk of plane and a 12-mile-long (20-kilometer-long) oil slick were found early Wednesday, Brazilian air force spokesman Col. Jorge Amaral said. Rescuers have still found no signs of life.
The new debris was discovered about 90 kilometers (55 miles) south where searchers a day earlier found an airplane seat, a fuel slick, an orange lifevest and pieces of white debris.
The location of the new debris is consistent with where experts say currents in that part of the Atlantic would push anything on the surface.
The original debris was found roughly 400 miles (640 kilometers) northeast of the Fernando de Noronha islands off Brazil's northern coast.
The recovery effort is expected to be exceedingly challenging. Storm season is starting in the are and water depths sink down to 22,950 feet (7,000 meters).
Four boats and a tanker ship were en route to the scene but Brazil lacks equipment to scour the ocean floor, a Brazilian navy spokeswoman said Wednesday. Brazil was leading the search for wreckage, while France took charge of the crash investigation.
"The seas in the area are high, and that is slowing the arrival of our ships," she said, speaking on condition of anonymity. "We have four divers on the way, but the first of them will not get to the scene until midday Thursday."
The official said if the black boxes are at the bottom of the sea — three miles (five kilometers) deep in some nearby areas — there was nothing the Brazil navy could do as they do not have the special remotely controlled subs needed to withstand the pressure at the ocean's bottom.

I really hope they can figure out what caused this. I would be very worried about aircraft flying in that area until they do.

Me too. I remember telling myself before my trip to South America a few weeks ago that nothing would happen as I would fly with a very reputable airline (AF for me too) and besides, there had never been any major crash along that route before.. I will not feel comfortable flying on an A330 or to that area again before they have figured out what caused this accident.. Again, this is a horrible tragedy and my thoughts goes out to the 228 souls lost and their families and friends..

to me, this is a big deal. Very scary....these types of things are not supposed to happen.

US news would rather talk about Susan Boyle...thank this horrific experience these poor folks went thru.
You are so right about the internet thing. I think a certain airline has internet on their planes. Cant the black box send info through that and store the information somewhere.

The blk box is really compact and probably doesnt have much open space inside. Its made to withstand just about anything, even really intense fires. It would be like dropping a rock into the ocean, it would just sit on the bottom of the ocean floor until someone found it.
A sub (not built especially for such deep ocean probes) would collapse because the pressure on the ocean floor would push on the walls. Since there is open space in between the walls of the sub, it would eventually collapse.
Hope that made sense. That's all the info from all my years of watching history channel.

They might have to send in one of those robot terrain crawlers used for deep sea salvage. I'm sure they will get the data recorder one way or another.

The news was saying that the black boxes send out homing signals for 30 days if they hit water but that they don't float well. So if they sink can they still pick up the homing signal or is it only if they're floating? If there's no signal and they're on the seabed it must be like looking for a needle in a haystack. Goodness knows what technology they've got though - I really hope they're able to find them so they can find out exactly what's happened in this terrible, tragic case.

This is so heartbreaking and tragic, my heart goes out to them. I truly hope they'll find out what happened, because I believe this is so important to the families and friends of the missing. This might provide them an opportunity to seek closure. If ever.

I was hearing that the ocean floor in that area is pretty "mountaineous"

They just said on CNN it'd be like looking for the BL box in the Rockies or the Grand Canyon.

Like Roo, I'd be worried about flying in that area too. Hope they solve this soon.

They just did a story about a young couple that had just got engaged & were leaving her parents home in Brazil. They met in law school & graduated last year. Were on the flight heading back to Europe to tell his parents in Germany.

Me too. This scares me to death...for something like this to happen so long into the flight is extremely rare, and makes me suspect foul play.

I have been losing sleep over this. I am praying for all involved.
