Absolutely true Irish but worrying when operators do not take on board manufacturers advice to replace equipment.

Or do they want to create the illusion of terrorism to try to distract from the fact that they were warned about faulty equipment & did nothing about it??

I try to think of this every time I am on a plane. Hubby is flying back to US from Italy Monday so I am praying him and all of you guys have a safe flight.

Emergency landing for Airbus in smoke alert

By Pat Flynn
Saturday June 13 2009

A plane similar to the one that crashed in the Air France disaster was forced into an emergency landing at Shannon Airport yesterday after cabin crew reported smoke in the passenger cabin.
The pilot of Northwest Airlines flight 821 issued a Mayday call at around 1pm and contacted air traffic controllers at Shannon.
The pilot informed controllers that smoke had been detected in the passenger cabin and sought permission to divert and land as soon as possible.
The Airbus A330-323X, which was carrying 285 passengers and crew, was travelling at 36,000 feet on its journey from Rome to Atlanta at the time of the alert.
It was passing off the south west coast of Ireland when the pilot declared an emergency.
Just half-an-hour afterwards, the jet approached the airport from the west, flying in over the Shannon estuary and touching down at 1.20pm. Crash crews were standing by at strategic locations along the main runway and quickly pursued the aircraft until it came to a standstill.
After carrying out an inspection of the jet, the aircraft was able to taxi under its own power to a stand at the end of the terminal building.
Emergency vehicles quickly surrounded the aircraft and fire crews hosed down the right undercarriage. It is thought, however, that this was done after the jets brakes overheated during the emergency landing.
Fire crews remained with the jet for over an hour. The plane was given the all-clear two hours after landing and was able to continue its journey later. However, it is not known what caused the smoke.
The incident involved the same model of plane as this month's Air France tragedy in which all 228 people on board an A330 flying from Brazil were killed over the Atlantic.
Weather hampers Air france search

Word up. Also guys, remember that the A330 have been in use for almost 20 years with this being the first fatal accident with the model in commercial use (there was a crash during a test flight years ago). I will be flying AF to and from South-America at least once a year over the next few years, so I want to know what caused this as much as everybody else does, so that we as consumers and the airlines operating the planes can fly the safest planes possible.

My husband sent me this yesterday and it's troubling. The hub has enough flying hrs to get a pilots license so he's a bit of an aviation geek. But what is funny is that he hates flying commercial airlines! This link is about the Boeing 777 but is mostly about the 'fly by wire' issue which is also a concern with Airbus.

Really troubling Roo, I would be happy never to fly again or have anyone close to me fly! I never particularly liked flying but now I just feel it is a No NO!

If the airbus has been safely flown for 20 years then why on earth are all these emergency landings occuring?

Is it A) because they've always occured but only recently made media because of the Air France disaster? or B) a (series) of freaky coincidences?

Perhaps because equipment is outdated & companies won't pay to change, especially to have planes out of action in holiday period & therefore prepared to risk lives for income??

Companies will do all they can to cut corners and save money, within the regulations (well...some of them. others might fudge things, but that's another story). The airline industry hasn't been profitable for quite some time. Also the new rash of incidents could just be people being over-cautious and reporting everything now. A lot of times things do not get reported.
All that being said....flying is still safer than driving. The pilots are generally well trained, however you can't teach good judgement.
