Default 65% of Graduating Law School Class Do Not Have Jobs
I know there are a lot of other lawyers on this board. I found this story rather frightening. I'm interested in hearing whether you think this is an exception or an indicator of a rough future for our profession?

Placement Office Scrambles at Law School Where 65% of Grads Had No Jobs

By Debra Cassens Weiss
The numbers are bleak for the class of 2009 at the University of Colorado Law School.
About 35 percent of the students had jobs at graduation, down from 55 percent the year before, Law Week Colorado reports. Another Colorado school, the University of Denver Sturm College of Law, didn’t have graduation numbers as the publication went to press, but Misae Nishikura, assistant dean for the school’s career development center, said the numbers were down.
“There are definitely fewer students who had a job lined up at graduation this year compared to last year,” Nishikura told Law Week Colorado.
The lower numbers are spurring a search for alternatives, according to the story. The law schools are sponsoring networking events and also suggesting career options outside of law practice. One plan, still in the fundraising stage, would create internships with state judges.
The career development office at Colorado University law school is also contacting legal placement firms to see if they have any temporary jobs available.

And on a less gloomy note, I guess the diploma can always be used for more personal purposes:

I wonder if this is the trend for all grads, not only law grads? It's tough out there.

It is a trend for all grads. Lots of jobs (and internships) have been cancelled.

For all professions. From engineering, lawyers, business students, etc.

I'm not worried about it. Personally I hate when they publish information like this because it just sends people into a tailspin.

Yep. I just graduated in May (in grad school now), and I don't know very many people who graduated with me who landed jobs.
Another of my friends is in law school; she is in the top 10% of her class and one of the top schools in the country. She applied to 102 places before she got an internship. An UNPAID internship.

My friend was lucky. She said most of the grads had a hard time, but she had worked as a clerk over the summer and was able to be hired by the firm she worked for. It's hard for everyone though. Two other friends who graduated in business, graduated with high grades and held a position with Alpha Kappa Psi. One had to work temp services until one of the jobs turned into a permanent one, and the other is now a professional acrobat. lol...she loves it though and is very successful. In her case, it was probably good she couldn't find a job immediately or she would never have found her calling.

I agree. I think it also has to do w/ regionalism. I was offered a job since last year, even before I graduated law school (I am in East Coast) this May.
I started working since Sept after my bars and now I am actually moving to another firm who gave me an offer I cant refuse.
Many of my classmates were also given offers before our 3L yr began...Albeit there were some who were w/o employment upon graduation but I didnt think the numbers were so high that it was alarming. I really think these statistics need to be taken w/ a grain of salt b/c there are soo many factors/variables involved (grades, school ranking, personality, firm size, practice field, etc). Not to mention hiring is a very individualized process. IMO.

Hopefully other lawyers and law grads can chime in as well.
