It's definitely no longer not the profession our parents brought us up to think it was. I'm glad I thought twice inundating myself under hundreds of thousands of tuition dollars in debt.

I often complain about my loans, but I landed 2 good jobs since graduating (one was a one-year contract position, the other is my dream job).

I think what we all really need to get past is that everything will be just perfect if you have a grad degree: you'll be rich, have your dream job and a house with a pool in the suburbs. It takes much more hard work, determination and integrity to be successful than ever now. The economy is just separating the wheat from the chaff, IMHO.

My dad told me about this, and that sucks for all recent grads. They have to pay of their student loans asap, and with firms only hiring the few of the best, its not going to happen very soon. They even have to compete against attorneys with more experiance. It must really suck.

My SO is graduating from law school in May. He had an interview this past weekend, and it went well.

He didn't get a job offer but was told that they are interested, to keep in touch and that they want to interview him closer to his graduation date. It is a fairly new firm, but it is an amazing opportunity... they already have some famous clients on their roster.

We are hopeful that he will have a job offer in 8-9 months. We want to get engaged, but we will not until he has a job.

Thanks for posting!! That's much more believable. :)

I don't know what to think. A lot of older attorneys I talk to say its the best career ever. (Of course, that demographic is made up solely of people who liked the work enough to stick with it for 10-20 years.) But then, they graduated when there were 1/2 as many attorneys per issue as there are today - and with $15-30k in student loans. With those stats, I'd have to agree with them. Today, its not that the salaries are bad, its that you're paying the equivalent of a mortgage every month in student loan payments for the privilege of making that salary.

I agree. My SO is going to graduate law school completely debt-free. Which really helps in this economy, as he can take less pay if necessary and not have to worry about $100-200k in loans.

good point.

even with just a bachelor's. Some people think with that degree alone they will get all that and a third

A trend for ALL grads...

that is not inclusive of the grads with the jobs that are not even the jobs in their field that they studied for = not making what they are supposed to be making after the degree/MS program...

Many of my classmates were also given offers before our 3L yr began...Albeit there were some who were w/o employment upon graduation but I didnt think the numbers were so high that it was alarming. I really think these statistics need to be taken w/ a grain of salt b/c there are soo many factors/variables involved (grades, school ranking, personality, firm size, practice field, etc). Not to mention hiring is a very individualized process. IMO.

Hopefully other lawyers and law grads can chime in as well.

I have a job as an attorney and I attended a decent law school. The vast majority of my friends found legal jobs relatively quickly. BUT a few friends of mine - some of which even have LLMs at this point - are still looking for a job after a year.

Whether or not you get a job out of law school depends on how highly your school is ranked, what your class rank is, where your law school is, how well you interview, and what type of activities you were involved in during law school.

the markets really not THAT bad right now, at least not in philly. People are blowing it out of proportion, and students are getting whiney because they aren't getting the $150k a year jobs they dreamed about when entering law school, but jobs are definitely there if you look for them

I go to a decent law school (top 50ish, not the the best of the best by any means) and I'd say 75% of the people who graduated have jobs by now (bar results just came out here about a month ago.) My bf was one of them, sure, he took a job that wasn't his first choice, but whatever, he has a job, and he's had no trouble finding interviews to go on in attempts to find a job that he prefers over his current situation.

I want to go into real estate law, that goal, is most definitely not going to happen in this market....
