3-year-old twins die in car

Mother reports toddlers missing; deputies find them 2½ hours later

Twin 3-year-olds died Sunday afternoon after being shut inside a parked car for more than two hours in the Montara area just south of Topeka, officials said.
The twins, a boy and a girl, were last seen about 1 p.m. and were reported missing about 1:40 p.m., officials said.

Law enforcement officials survey where 3-year-old twins were found inside a car in the Montara neighborhood. Both toddlers died.

The children were discovered about 3:15 p.m. inside a silver, four-door Daewoo Leganza car parked in the driveway of their home, a one-story beige residence with brown trim at 6801 S.W. Windsong.
Shawnee County sheriff's Sgt. Akim Reynolds said the boy was found in the front seat of the car. The girl was found in the back seat.
Sheriff's deputies performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on both children before emergency medical responders arrived on the scene.
The girl was pronounced dead at the scene. The boy was taken by American Medical Response ambulance to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Reynolds said the doors to the car were unlocked.
The deputies who located the children were "very distraught" afterward, Reynolds said.
The temperature between 1 and 4 p.m. held steady at an unseasonably cool 77 degrees.
However, Reynolds said, the temperature inside a car with its windows up can be 30 to 40 degrees higher than the outdoor air temperature, meaning the vehicle's interior could have approached 115 degrees.
"The officer who opened the door said it was very hot inside the car," Reynolds said.
Deputies responding to the report of the missing twins conducted a search in the immediate area of the children's house and in the surrounding neighborhood.
One resident who lives nearby said he saw a sheriff's deputy and another officer checking his above-ground swimming pool about 2 p.m., looking for the missing children.
The sheriff's office enlisted the assistance of a Kansas Highway Patrol helicopter before the twins were found inside the car.
After the children were found, deputies placed yellow crime-scene tape around the front — or east side — of the house, including the driveway where the car was parked.
A motorboat with a tarp was parked immediately north of the car in a grassy area adjacent to the driveway.
No foul play is suspected, though the mother was being questioned by detectives, Reynolds said.
The child's father, whom Reynolds said worked out of town, had been notified and was returning to Topeka.
The sheriff's Crime Scene Investigation Unit was at the scene and was photographing the interior of the car through its closed windows.
Autopsies are to be performed on the children, and the case remains under investigation.

Oh,no! Do they think the kids were hiding in the car? I'm glad autopsies are being done, just in case this isn't the horrible accident it appears to be. It seems as though the kids could have gotten out of the car themselves if they managed to get in, but maybe not.

WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON?!!!! Are we going to have start giving people bumper stickers with the importance of not leaving your children in the car on a boiling hot day? I mean for goodness sake we all know not to leave our dogs in the car!!

This is all too sad.

This just sent shivers down my spine. I hate reading these stories but I guess in a way it's good they are being posted so that people can keep this issue in the forefront of their mind.

May the little ones rest in peace.

ok, some parents need to definitely invest in a convertible. this is too much

there is no doubt in my mind that the parents should be held accountable.

I don't understand why the car was not checked earlier and first by the mom if not by the police. That is aside from the fact that you have watch toddler's like a hawk. If it is nap time you have to make certain they are contained. I have one, I know. They are escape artists and the poor angels have no fear and love to explore.

Do they know what the heck happened? Did they sneak outside and play in the car, or did she put them there to contain them, or forget to bring them in after running errands, etc?

So terrible.

Update: News conference will address deaths

By Ann Marie Bush
The Capital-Journal
Published Monday, August 25, 2008 at 12:02 p.m. CDT
The Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office will have a news conference at 3 p.m. today to discuss the deaths of two siblings on Sunday.

CJOnline will bring you information from the news conference when it ends.
The Shawnee County coroner’s office is conducting autopsies today on the children, who died Sunday afternoon after being shut inside a parked car in the Montara area just south of Topeka, said Shawnee County Sheriff Sgt. Jay Simecka.
The two children were identified by the Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office as twins Sunday. However, Simecka said this morning the two were siblings who were born 11 months apart. The girl’s date of birth was Sept. 29, 2004, and the boy’s birth date was Aug. 2, 2005, Simecka said.
Simecka said the investigation continues and names of the two children aren’t being released.
The children were last seen Sunday about 1 p.m. and were reported missing about 1:40 p.m., officials said. The children were discovered about 3:15 p.m. inside a silver, four-door Daewoo Leganza car parked in the driveway of the family's home at 6801 S.W. Windsong.
