Default 160 Years After Mysterious Death, Edgar Allan Poe Gets Proper Funeral
His death was as mysterious as his writings. He was found outside a bar, delirious, unable to tell anyone what was wrong with him. He was 40 years old and was dead within a few days. A cousin didn't announce the death and had Poe buried with only about 10 people in attendance.

"This is our chance to make amends for what wasn't done in 1849," says Jeff Jerome, the curator of Baltimore's Poe House and Museum.

Out of respect for Poe and for what people are doing for him, I'm not posting pictures here. But you can find them along with the rest of the article here:

The Raven has always been my favorite poem:

Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered weak and weary,
Over many a quaint and curious volume of forgotten lore . . .

And the replica Poe, replete with period dress, has been a huge draw as Baltimore and other cities that claim the writer as a native son celebrated the bicentennial of his birth.

"It is not a dummy. It's a re-creation of Mr. Poe. This is not a mannequin. When people look at this, people don't say there's a dummy dressed like Poe. They think it is Poe, and that's what we want," Jerome says.
A fake Poe.

Interesting that he was allegedly found with someone else's clothes on.

Does it really matter if it's a fake Poe? They don't want to call it that because it would ruin the solemnity of what they're trying to do.

And they couldn't very well dig up Poe's grave, now could they?

I had to memorize and recite Annabelle Lee in the 6th grade, The Raven in the 7th. Now I make my honors Am. Lit students memorize/recite Raven in pairs. They freak out bc it's 18 stanzas long.... lol. I tell them if i could do the whole thing when I was 13, they can surely do half of it now.

Poe was such an interesting historical figure... gotta feel sorry for him, too!

I almost want to go and leave a glass of red wine and a rose at his gravesite.

I'd be thrilled to have an assignment like that, I love poetry.

I should have said "A FAUX POE".

In this case I feel a memorial service would be more appropriate - not a recreation of a body. KWIM????

^^ Oh, okay.

I get what you mean, but I think the feeling was he didn't get a proper funeral so they were trying to make up for that.

My favorite story of his is cask of amontillado he had such a twisted beautiful mind.

"No answer still. I thrust a torch through the remaining aperture and let it fall within. There came forth in return only a jingling of the bells. My heart grew sick; it was the dampness of the catacombs that made it so. "

that part of the story just hits me
