WALDWICK, N.J. (CBS) ― The Waldwick recreational football team had just begun warm-up exercises on Monday afternoon when 13-year-old Sean Fisher collapsed on the field and died.

Witnesses say a father, who happens to be a paramedic, rushed over to Fisher and administered CPR. A defibrillator was used once an EMT arrived, but it was too late, and now a community mourns the loss of a young life.

"They were only a few minutes into warm-up. He just fell to the ground," said Waldwick School Superintendent Dr. Robert Penna.

Friends of the 8th grader have set up a MySpace page dedicated to him. Athletes from a nearby high school were shocked by the news, but said serious injury and overheating are concerns they have while training.

"We're so used to just pushing ourselves, it's easy to ignore the pain. You don't realize the pain you're actually in," said Ridgewood High School student Alex Scibetta.

Doctors warn that any physical activity can aggravate a pre-existing condition.

"On the one hand kids like to play…They want to be competitive. But on the other hand, it does expose them to a slight risk of sudden death," said Cardiologist Dr. Franz Messerli.

Fisher was pronounced dead at Valley Hospital in Ridgewood.

There are many congenital cardiovascular and neurological conditions that are never discovered, because there are no symptoms, until the person drops dead. It happens very often. We just don't hear about it unless it's a football or basketball incident that the media can milk under "dangerous sports and coaches" headlines.

In football, players assume that because they and everybody else are wearing padding, they can hit people (and get hit) harder, not realizing that can cause internal injuries.

i happened to be at the hospital er when they brought sean fisher in. i actually was standing outside and saw them take him from the ambulance. i saw them working on him furiously. i saw the 6 foot something emt or police officer putting every ounce of his body weight behind chest compressions with a force and determination very rarely seen. and i saw his parents. his father red faced and hysterical. his mother looking as if she truly had no idea where she was, stoic and white. i saw the triage nurse we had laughed with a bit earlier take them both by the hand. and then after i went back inside to my husband i heard his mother howl and moan. i have never heard anything like it. i can liken it to that of a wounded animal. because truly isn't that what she is? and i hurt. i physically hurt for her, for sean's father, for that poor little boy just coming into his own. my heart is broken for this family. seeing sean's lifeless body somehow bound me to them. i can only wih him peace in a better place. and i don't know wat to wish his parents, as one myself i do not know how you get up in the morning.

Very true. It sounds like he had an pre-existing heart condition to me. Unless more news comes to light. When I was in eighth grade a kid in my school dropped dead while he was doing a run for basketball practice. It was a heart condition. Very sad.

I am in tears from reading this. God bless these people. I can't imagine. I have a son close to his age and my middle guy just started playing football. You are not supposed to bury your children! My heart aches for these parents. I am thinking of them and can't imagine what they are going through.

This brought tears to my eyes. It's something no parent should ever go through. You should never have to see your child go before you. My prayers are with them.
