Transitioning from Pill to TTC

Does anyone know if there is a recommended time to get off the pill before TTC? I know there's no time necessary (CAN get pregnant immediately after going off the pill), but I'm wondering in a perfect world if it's better to be off the pill for a couple of months or six months or a year before trying to get pregnant. Thanks!

P.S. - If there's already a thread about this, I'm really sorry - couldn't find anything when I searched (surprised by that!).

I stopped taking the pill 1 year before ttc:ing to prepare my body.

^^^ That's sort of what I was thinking. Thanks for the info - I'm amazed that I haven't been able to find much about this subject online. I know I can talk to my OB/GYN about it, but every doctor has a different opinion. I'd rather hear it from real live women! Thanks again.

My DR said I didn't need to wait at all between stopping the pill and TTC. Its whatever you feel comfortable doing! Good Luck!!

I've been off the pill for about 2 years now and we are just starting TTC, but I went of the pill more because of not liking the side effects than in preparation for TTC. It took nearly 3 months before I got my first period after going off the pill, so be prepared for the possiblity of having irregular cycles for a while, which can be torture if you are always wondering if you are pg or not.

i've always understood it as u can get pregnant whenever u want when off the pill. but most MDs will reccommend a backup method of birth control for a couple months just to know where u are in ur cycle for dating purposes. also, like stated above, not everyone get their period immediately (i know from personal experience) so be prepared for a few additional months or waiting. or u could be like my friends and pregnant in the first month off!

We're planning to start TTC late this summer/early fall. I wasn't sure if I should go off the pill (don't want to because I love short, regular periods) and use a back up method for a few months, or if I should just stop taking them when we're ready to start trying.

It can take a little while (a few months) for your cycles to normalize after stopping the pill, so it's probably a good idea to stop a couple of months before you are ready to start trying. Some people do conceive the first month, though, so be aware of that!

It's funny - I've always been SO careful about taking the pill on time, etc., because I figured I'd be able to get pregnant if I missed it for one or 2 days. Guess we'll see how right I was...

My cycles were never normal when I wasn't on the pill. I guess I'll just have to stock up on HPTs when the time comes!

I've just been to see my gyno about this same question. We're TTC (ideally in June, July, or August) and my doctor told me to stop taking the pill now. I finished my active pills (I only had 2 left) and started taking the prenatal vitamins.
Going off the pill is stressful, b/c I've been on it for 9 years!

Please keep me posted - we're thinking about starting in Aug/Sept/Oct and I REALLY don't want to have to use condoms in the meantime. I'm thinking I'll stop the pill in August and see how it goes. I ordered the prenatals (need help with my hair anyway) because I want to find one that won't make me nauseous. Haven't started them yet - probably will in May or so.

I'll definitely keep you posted. Have you asked your doctor what she recommends? Mine said that it's a good idea to stop the pill so that when we do actively try, I will have most likely started ovulating again. If you want to conceive in Aug. the earliest, you might want to stop before then. I know how you feel though, I don't want to have to use any other BC either!

I went off the pill in Feb the year I conceived my twins. We decided to get pregnant in April. I got pregnant my first month TTC. In between we weren't not trying, but we weren't actively trying like how we were in April (sorry, that statement even confuses me!)

But in all, I'd get off it at least a couple of months. I'm back on the pill now but will probably stop in June to prepare for TTC in August/Sept. We'll see how that goes...

^^^ I'd love twins! Ideally a boy and a girl, and then we'd be done! Hubby would be happy with 2 boys too - but I think if we had 2 girls, he'd want to try again. We have twins on both sides of the family - both my mom's side and my dad's side - and on DH's dad's side. Fingers crossed...

I'm going off of the pill this week (I am in my pill free week and won't continue) as DH and I are inactively trying for baby #2 - basically, we're just going to let it happen on it's own.

Like illinirdhd, I know that it's possible right from the first month, but does anyone know what the average time is?
