Prescription prenatal 'Prenatal RX1' has yummy vanilla flavor. It smells like candy! Another good thing is it's MUCH cheaper than other brands..I dispense this one alot. Primacare One (big purple ones) is very good, but it's very expensive!

I know my prenatal vitamin has 800 mcg folic acid. One-A-Day Women's, which I took before just as a regular vitamin, has only 400 mcg. They both say they have 100% of the RDA for folic acid. I think it's just that the recommended folic acid amount while pregnant is higher than it is otherwise.

Strangely, though, the prenatal has 28 mg of iron, which it calls 156%, while the One-A-Day has 18 mg, which it calls 100%. So I'm not sure why they handle some things differently than others. It is a little confusing.

Personally, I take Kroger generic prenatal vitamins. It says they are the same as Stuart Prenatal. My doctor said that was fine. I haven't noticed any particular smell to them.

Thanks for the thread. I was going to ask about pre-natal vitamins.

I am starting to think about TTC so I decided to start taking pre-natal vitamins. I picked up a Target's generic ones. Is that acceptable??? Should I speak with my doctor and get a Px? Any advice would be appreciated!!!!

Oh haven't noticed their smell/taste, just take with water already in my mouth.

Virgo,

The prenatals you got from Target should be just fine! Mine are OTC and they seem to be good..My DR said he would presribe some when i actually get PG...I think they are basically the same thing though. My fingernails never grow...and the prenatals make them nice and strong!!

Mine aren't that nasty, I just swallow it fast. I'm used to taking vitamins, and that icky "vitamin" taste.

The problem I've got with pre-natals is that they hurt my tummy. They make me feel really bloated.

I'm using some generic ones from over the counter. I just don't breathe before swallowing, and I make sure to drink lots of water right afterwards... I don't taste a thing!

my sister is confusing me. she said i should start taking prenatal vitamins, since i'm TTC, however, she also said that i should get folic acid prescription, on top of the prenatal vitamins. from what i've read so far, it seems folic acid is PART of prenatal vitamins. so is my sis talking about additional folic acid prescription?

You definitely want to be getting folic acid while TTC (it prevents neural tube defects), but prenatal vitamins should contain a pretty hefty dose of folic acid. Whether or not you need more folic acid on top of that, I'm not sure. I have been just on regular prenatal vitamins with my pregnancies, and the doctors have never said anything about taking additional folic acid.

Does anyone else feel dizzy and tired on them? I never took vitamins before, just started taking prenatal ones a couple of weeks ago and feel TERRIBLE on them. Since my job is very demanding and requires me to work 18 hour days right now, I'm not so happy about this... Am I alone on this one???
