Japster- Please post away!!
We need advice from women who have "been there, done that", not to mention success stories to give us hope and inspiration...

rosyposie - feel free to PM me if you'd like to hear about my experiences with both IUI and IVF - it's kind of long and drawn out but it does have a happy ending!
IUI is well worth a try since you're already on clomid and the procedure itself is quick and painless. The success rate is about 25% per round I think. IVF on the other hand is a major undertaking and it's very stressful and emotionally and physically draining with the odds not being much better than IUI. I know there are tons of success stories out there, but it's not an easy thing to go through. Good luck - hope you won't have to resort to either!!! |

We had been trying of over a year without any success and ended up doing ICSI. I think for IVF they put the egg and the sperm in the dish and wait for the sperm to swim into the egg. With ICSI, they actually injected a single sperm into the egg.
We were told by our fertility doctor that they really only recommend performing IUI on women who have problems with having intercourse. And with my husband's sperm count being low that IUI wouldn't be a good option for us. The success rate is pretty low and would have to go through a couple of rounds without a guarantee. Since our insurance does not cover this, we decided to go for the ICSI since it had a much higher success rate. For us I think it was over 60% if the egg made it to blastocyst (a 5 day old fertilized egg), which luckily 3 of our eggs made it to this stage. I heard from people that the whole process was really difficult physically and emotionally. But to be totally honest, I really didn't think it was that hard. I had a nasal spray that I had to do daily, which I think was the worst part. The bitter taste dripping down the back of my throat was disgusting. I found the injections to be easy. The needle was really thin and you can hardly feel it. I really didn't feel different emotionally during the process. I didn't cry once throughout the process and didn't become a crazy hormonal person like I was expecting. It was annoying because I had to go to the clinic often for scans and blood tests, but you get used that all that really quickly. The last couple of days before the egg collection were uncomfortable, because your uterus is filled with mature eggs. The egg collection was not so bad. Usually I have a bad reaction to anesthesia, but my surgery went smoothly. I rested at home for 2 days after the collection as I was a bit sore, but no real pain. Just some discomfort and I didn't even need to take any painkillers. Really the hardest part was waiting to see how far along the eggs would be growing and waiting to take the pregnancy test. I just finished my first trimester and we are so thrilled that the ICSI worked for us. Everything was explained to us really clearly each step of the process and it was so good to know exactly what was happening. It's so amazing what they can do now. I really think that the ICSI is a minor inconvenience because getting that BFP and seeing the baby in the scans is SOOOO worth it!!!! The procedure is only about 1 month out of your life and if you stay tough and positive you will get through it! |
