ok.... so I've recently been "diagnosed" (that sounds so bad) with Hypothryroidism.

My Endo said something about treating this before TTC..... I said absolutely..

Has anyone else dealt with this? What about adoption - would this be "safer" ?

TIA - this seems scary....

We've had another thread recently about hypErthyroidism - it seems people are dealing with a lot of thyroid issues lately!

Hypothyroidism is actually a pretty common disease, and lots of people deal with it and pregnancy. You would definitely want it to be under control before TTC, but then after that, it typically is controlled by taking 1 pill a day, and the medicine you take is _not_ harmful to a developing fetus. You would need to be monitored closely during pregnancy because you may require a higher dose of medicine at that time than you normally would. But controlled hypothyroidism should be manageable with pregnancy.

I would want to make sure that whoever my doctor will be is up to date and comfortable with managing thyroid disease in pregnancy. You might even consider seeing a maternal fetal medicine doctor (high-risk OB) depending on the expertise of the doctors where you live. As they said in the article, you would want to have things followed closely from the very beginning, not late in the first trimester at the time many women first see an OB.

Ok...as someone who was born without a thyroid, the child of someone born with a non-functioning one herself...this is easily treatable. It just has to be treated forever. You can have a kid just fine, but your doctor will have to monitor you closely and pay close attention to your medication.

Make sure you are seeing an Endocrinologist and that your OB/GYN is involved in this process as well.

Thanks for all the help!
My doctors are the best (IMO!) and I know I'll be taken care of - I really appreciate all the posts.

I should have added a PS) at the end of my last post.

I'll definitely be seeing a high-risk OB... there are a couple other factors that might warrant a visit to one..... and now this... so, high-risk doc probably in my future!
