Question Coming off the pill ... how long to get regular?

Sorry if this has been discussed before. I'm new and just took my first test last night...it was negative. :(

This is my first month off birth control and my last period started on 7/22. I've been feeling strange for two weeks now so really thought I was pregnant. It must just be my body getting used to not being on the pill? How long did it take your body to become normal again?

I guess I'll wait another week or so and if AF doesn't show up I should consult with my doctor.

Good luck to all!

Hello and Welcome! Depends how long you've been on the pill. If you're asking, regular like, AF visits regularly (i.e, every 30 days) that could happen in 3 months. depends on your body. Your first AF might take a while to visit because your body is still adjusting. As always, consult your doctor. they'll give you a range.

good luck to you.

Thanks for the reply. I have a history of very painful, heavy periods, so was on a 12 week cycle of active pills and then off a week for my period. I can't quite remember, but I think I was on the last type of pills for at least nine months.

Only your doctor can give you a better gauge because she would know your health history while none of us do. Normal periods take anywhere from 3 mths to 2 yrs to resume depending on the Pill you used, your monthly cycles before Pill, how long you have been on it, and other factors. There is usually a time frame where people coming off the Pill should not TTC for the risk of producing unhealthy/deformed babies. It varies from person to person so it's best to check with your doc.

It's not quite the same, but I had the Depo shot for a couple of years which sounds similar to you having 12 weeks of pills - although I had no periods at all. I had my last depo shot in late October last year, and I am due to start my third "regular" period this week. So that's 5 months from the date I should have had my next shot. I did have some spotting the month before.

Although I'm not yet TTC, I wanted to give my body time to settle down after 10 years of continuous hormonal birth control, and I was pleasantly surprised at how little time it seems to have taken.

I was on the pill for about 14 years when I came off in late 2006. It took me about 8 months to get normal periods and in a timely manner. They were so off for that time period. It really depends on your body and how long you were on the pill.

I just googled this the other day. The general consensus seemed to be that it completely depends on your body. Some people are regular within a month or two, and others take a lot longer than that. I think it also depends on whether you ever did have regular periods when you weren't on the pill. I never did, so I'm not expecting them to be regular now. There was also mention of a pretty high number of twins being conceived right after stopping the pill.

DH and I have just started TTC, and since I never had regular periods before, I'm using ovulation tests to help figure out when I'm the most fertile, just in case the calendar thing doesn't work for us!

I conceived my 2 kiddos right off the pill. My first one was after one month of trying and the next one was conceived right after I stopped OCP's. Now, I've been on continuous OCP's for the last 2 years- no periods at all as I took the pill everyday. I am finally getting regular cycles so I know my body was kind of thrown off by all the hormones. I'm currently TTC #3 with my new DH so I'm hoping for a BFP soon!
When I came off the pill to have my first child, it took me 6 weeks to get a period. I took numerous HPT's but in the end it just took my body some time to adjust. Some times your doc may jump start your period with Provera. Good luck!!
