No, dear, I am not.

I have had a couple of friends who have experienced this in the past couple of weeks. I didn't even know that it was even a "thing" that happened, you know?! I just wanted to hear some others experiences who have dealt with this...

I am not sure if I will have this problem or not yet but I may. The women most prone to this are those who have had any kind of surgery on their cervix in the past. LEEPs and Cone Biopsy as an example for removing cervical cancer or precancerous cells found on your cervix. This weakens your cervix and may lead to you not being able to hold a future pregnancy. I had a LEEP and a Cone over a decade ago and was told at the time that it may be an issue in a future pregnancy. Becomes an issue in the 2nd trimester and this is one of the main causes of miscarriages in the 2nd trimester. As the weight of the sac and uterus bears down on the cervix it may give way and cause one to lose the baby early. If one feels they may be at risk for this, their doctor may often recommend stitching the cervix closed before you get to the stage in your pregnancy where this might happen. This is a technique that has been successful in making an incomp. cervix a non-issue but you have to get it done before it becomes an issue. This is my understanding of this but any OB worth their degree should be aware of it and be able to suggest solutions....they should talk to their doctor. Anyone who has had cervical surgeries should be sure their OB is aware of this when they give their medical history and should stay on top of the doc to be sure they consider stitching it shut just in case.

My mum apparently had this when she was pregnant with me and they tied it with some sort of string, or at least that's her understanding! LOL!

Incompetent cervix is remidied with a Cerclage. They tie the cervix closed with a suture thread to prevent a miscarriage. The suture is then removed when the pregnancy reaches term and the mom is ready to deliver.

I've had several friends with IC (and I had months of hospital bedrest with pre-term labor). If IC is discovered early in the pregnancy (weeks) and the woman isn't dilated too far yet, a doctor will do a cerclage to try to prevent a miscarriage. There's also a strong chance of bedrest in addition to the cerclage.

If IC is found later in the pregnancy (past about week 22 or so) or after the woman has dilated quite a bit, then it's too late for a cerclage, and bedrest is the typical option.

If your friend has IC and isn't already seeing a Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist/Perinatologist I'd recommend she ask she current provider for a referral to one. Those doctors specialize in high-risk patients. She should ask to be treated as "high risk" for any following pregnancies, as odds are increased that it will occur again.

Good luck to your friend. It can be scary to go through.

I have had a couple of friends go through this...and they both still totally dilated with the cerclage. One delivered at 24 weeks (obviously too early) and the other at 27 weeks.

I just hate seeing people go through this. It is so unfair.

I too had a friend who delivered still-borns three times before the 4th one worked. she also had the cerclage. Now she even has two children. sometimes it takes time, sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.
