Child's Killer, John Couey Dead

JACKSONVILLE -- John Couey, the man convicted in 2007 of killing 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford, has died.
According to reports, Couey died at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday at a Jacksonville hospital.
Officials say he died of natural causes. However, a Department of Corrections spokeswoman declined to provide specifics on Couey's illness.
Couey, 51, was convicted of charges of first-degree murder, sexual battery on a person under 12 and kidnapping. He was sentenced to death.
Prosecutors said he broke into the Homosassa home of the third-grader with the intent of burglarizing it. They said he abducted her and took her to his home, then raped her. He then put her into two plastic bags and buried her alive, they said.

So long, you piece of sh*t. I hope you burn.

Good riddance! The only shame is it couldn't have happened a few years ago and spared that poor innocent girl the pain and terror she suffered at that monster's hands.

I remember this crime. The police knocked at this scumbag's door and didn't bother to look around and she was in the closet. They could have saved her. Crap like this makes me sick.
I remember he saying something to the effect that he himself couldn't understand why the cops didn't look around. His place was across the street from Jessica's house. The sheer stupidity of the cops was amazing.

Good! I have no sympathy for him. What he did to Jessica Lunsford was horrible and cruel. I hope he rots for what he did.

I just wish he could have faced his execution. Florida should have sent him here to Texas. We could have put a little speed into that process for them.

And as for the police not searching his residence, I don't know the details of their questioning, but just because he was a registered sex offender, does not mean that they have probable cause for search. If nothing in their plain view was askew and he did not give any clearly conflicting or incriminating statements, they could not enter hiw residence. I really wish that they could have -and would have- gone in to find her, but hindsight is always 20/20. I am sure those questioning officers beat themselves up every day for what happened.

^ Exactly ... just because the cops have suspicion doesn't mean they can get a judge to issue a search warrant. I'm sure the police did everything they could.

Don't blame the police for what this horrible man did.

I'm more concerned about crimes he may have committed that we will never know about.

I think if a sex offender lives across the street from a missing kid you don't think that gives probable cause to search their residence? Too many rights are preserved for these scumbags and not enough for the victims. I remember the case. The cops themselves said they should have searched the place.Yeah a normal person no, a sex offender yes, she would still be alive today if they had done their job. I'm not blaming the police for this monster but they could have possibly stopped him.

Just the fact that he is a sex offender does not give automatic probable cause. I agree, they are given too may rights, but until the Courts change the probably cause doctrine that officers like me have to follow, we are stuck with it for what it is.

If you are not blaming the police, then why are you also saying that they didn't do their job? I am quite sure that they did their job to the best of their ability within the parameters allowed.
