SUPERCOP TO SOLVE THE MYSTERY OF MADELEINE

Gerry and Kate

Sunday October 7,2007

By Matt Drake

Police were last night preparing to call in one of Portugal’s most respected detectives in a desperate attempt to solve the mystery of missing Madeleine McCann.

Chief Inspector Carlos do Carmo is being lined up to spearhead the faltering investigation after the leading officer working on the case, Goncalo Amaral, was forced to stand down.

While the inquiry will officially remain based on the theory that Madeleine’s parents Kate and Gerry killed her, the change of leadership is expected to signal an in-depth review of the case.

Mr Carmo could take over the six-man team as early as next week to avoid further allegations that the investigation is on the verge of collapsing.

Close friends of the McCanns say they are worried that for two months police have made no effort to search for Madeleine, who was three when she vanished on May 3.

Police sources confirmed yesterday that Carmo’s outstanding record marked him out as the obvious choice to take over Portugal’s largest-ever missing person case.

Kate and Gerry

The McCanns’ spokesman, Clarence Mitchell, welcomed the possible appointment.

He said: “Kate and Gerry are keen to see a quick and effective transfer of the handling of the case. Their main concern is that the attention of the investigation returns to searching for Madeleine.

“They are willing to do whatever is asked of them to co-operate and have always said they are willing to return for a review of the case.”

Amaral was taken off the case after he made controversial remarks about British police allegedly being influenced by the McCanns.

It will be very difficult

Mark Williams-Thomas

Mark Williams-Thomas, a former child protection detective, said whoever takes over will have to catch up quickly if the case is not to lose momentum.

“It will be very difficult,” he said. “It’s good to have a fresh pair of eyes but it will take a while to get up to speed. But I don’t think it will be an insurmountable task.”

Colleagues of Mr Carmo say his scientific approach could finally provide answers about what really happened on the night Madeleine went missing.

He has forged a reputation for getting results after leading a number of high-profile investigations. The chief inspector made his name in 2005 after tracking down a gang of armed bank robbers on the Algarve using phone bugs and advanced forensic techniques on suspect vehicles.

Thanks a bunch Roz.

I have a question for you: how possible would it be for you to put together a timeline and summary of facts in this case so we can have it at the beginning of this thread? You have followed this so closely from day one, it would be cool to have that here right at the start of thread #2 so we can continue on. Do you have time to do that?

May 3rd.

6 p.m. The McCanns pick their children up at the Ocean Club’s creche.
7.30 Madeleine and the twins go to bed.
8.30 Gerry and Kate arrive at the Tapas restaurant.
8.45 Russell, Matthew and Rachel Oldfield go to the restaurant.
8.55 David and Fiona Payne also arrive at the Tapas. According to David, all the elements of the group were already there. But Rachel assures that Matthew arrived two or three minutes after the Paynes.
9.00 Matthew went to check on the children.
9.05 Gerry left the Tapas to check on his children. When he is returning to the dinner, he meets Jeremy Wilkins – an english man he met during the holidays – and chats with him for ten minutes. Neither Gerry nor Jeremy notice Jane or the suspicious man that she says she saw, although they were all on the same narrow street at the same time.
9.10 Jane went to check on her children and notices a man walking hastily, carrying a child. She memorizes the suspect, but fails to recognize Maddie.(Later she will say that she recognised Madeleines pyjamas & later that the child was madeleine)
9.25 Gerry returns to Tapas. Russell told PJ that at this time Matt and he went to check the children.
9.30 Matthew goes into Madeleine’s apartment. Russell O’Brien leaves the restaurant at the same time. In the first statements, Matt does not refer anything strange in Madeleine’s room and Russell fails to explain that he stayed in his apartment because his younger daughter was feeling sick. Later, Matt said that he noticed more light in the McCanns’ apartment and Russell revealed his daughter was vomiting.
9.35 Matthew Oldfield returned to Tapas.
9.45 Jane Tanner says at this time – not at 9.30 – Matthew and Russell left the restaurant.
9.55 Russell returns to the restaurant.
10.00 Kate goes to the apartment and notices her daughter has disappeared. She goes back to Tapas and raises the alarm shouting "they've taken her, They.ve taken her". Everybody leaves the restaurant, except Dianne Webster.
10.05 Dianne Webster goes into Maddie’s room. The twins are sleeping.
22.15 Dianne returns to Tapas, to pick up her purse and her camera.

Rachel and Matthew Oldfield

Rachell Manpilly is 36 and she is married to Matthew Oldfield. The couple has a daughter, who was only 18 months old when Madeleine McCann disappeared. But now even so the Oldfields asked for the Ocean Club’s babysitting service. Matthew met Gerry McCann when both doctors worked together at a hospital in Leicester. Matt has a pending accusation for medical negligence in that hospital, after a late diagnosis resulted in the death of a patient. This was not the first time the Oldfields spent their holidays with this group. The last trip had been to Greece – where they also stayed in a resort of the Ocean Club’s group – but that time Gerry and Kate did not accompany them.

Dianne Webster

63 year old Dianne Webster is the oldest element of the group. This credit controller is the mother of Fiona Payne and the grandmother of two of the children from the group that was spending their holidays in the Ocean Club.
To the portuguese police, Dianne told she could not precise which elements abandoned the Tapas restaurant during dinner, on the night that Madeleine disappeared. Fiona’s mother is also the only witness that said each couple was responsible for their own children, and did not enter their friends’ apartments.
After Kate entered the restaurant – visibly upset and yelling “they’ve taken our Madeleine” – Dianne was the only one who stayed seated at the Tapas’ table. Which she only left five minutes later.

David and Fiona Payne

It was David Payne who organised the group’s holidays at Praia da Luz. The reservation was made over the internet, after a good experience with the Ocean Club’s group, in Greece. This was the second time that David came to Portugal. The first time was eleven years ago, before he got married.
David and Fiona have been together for seven years and are both doctors, like the McCanns’ friends. The couple has two children and they were the only ones in the group who used the babyphone system to keep watch over the children during dinners – which always took place without the small ones.
Fiona was back in the Algarve on July 11, along with Rachel and Russell, in order to give their third deposition to PJ.

Russell O’Brien and Jane Tanner

Russell O’Brien is a doctor and lives in Exeter – the same english city where the sister of Robert Murat lives.
After studying at the same university as David Payne, O’Brien met Jane, with whom he has two children. The friendship between Russell and David is so strong that he chose him as his wedding godfather when he made his relationship with Fiona official, in Italy.
Coincidentally, Jane and Kate became pregnant at the same time, as the O’Brien couple’s oldest daughter is exactly the same age as Maddie.
Jane Tanner is one of the key witnesses in the ‘Madeleine case’, given the fact she says she saw a suspicious man, walking with a child in his arms, on the night of the disappearance. Jane describes the individual with extreme precision, although she was not capable to recognize the child he was carrying. The man that Jane saw has dark, thick hair and is 1.70 m tall.

Detective who suspected Kate and Gerry McCann may lead hunt

Steven Swinford and Christopher Thompson in Portimao

A senior detective who called in the parents of Madeleine McCann for questioning and played a key role in the decision to make them suspects is one of the favourites to take charge of the investigation.
Luis Neves, 41, was seen by the McCanns as a “breath of fresh air” when he joined the inquiry team three weeks after Madeleine’s disappearance. But he later became convinced she had died in an accident in the McCanns’ apartment.
He is now a frontrunner to replace Goncalo Amaral, the former head of the investigation who was sacked last week after he accused British police of working only on leads given to them by the McCanns.
The appointment, which could be made as early as tomorrow, is seen as critical in determining whether police resume the search for Madeleine or continue to focus on the McCanns.

Police in the Algarve, however, want Carlos do Carmo to get the post. Do Carmo, who has no previous connection with the case, was Amaral’s predecessor as director of the police in Portimao and earned the respect of colleagues after bringing the killer of a police officer to justice.
Gerry and Kate McCann hope the police changes will help galvanise the search for their daughter. Their legal team want British police to carry out an independent review of the case.
A source said: “The police abandoned the kidnap hypothesis too rapidly. We are trying to convince them to continue the hunt for Madeleine. We are considering a review from both British and Portuguese police.”
Amaral, who has been taken off the case and demoted to the rank of inspector, last week refused to comment. He told a friend, however, he had been expecting to lose his post for “some time” after a “crescendo of violence” from the media.
The police team is about to lose another senior detective, Tavares Almeida, who has applied for extended leave. The six remaining officers on the case are insisting on taking holiday built up over the 157 days of the investigation. It means the team could be cut by half.
Neves, national director of the DCCB, the Portuguese equivalent of the Serious Organised Crime Agency, began briefing the McCanns at the end of May. But in August, after police sniffer dogs allegedly found the “scent of death” in the McCanns’ apartment, Neves became “cold and distant”. Then last month, he called Gerry McCann directly to inform him that he and his wife would be questioned separately.
It is understood he was present during the questioning of Kate McCann, and, along with Amaral and Guilhermino Encarnacao, the director of police in Faro, decided the McCanns should be made suspects.
The upheaval in the investigation came as private detectives working for the McCanns were attempting to trace a new witness after a sighting in Morocco. According to Spanish police sources, a 30-year-old Moroccan woman, who lives in Malaga, Spain, reported seeing a girl who had the “mark of Madeleine”, referring to her distinctive right eye, where the pupil merges with the blue-green iris.
The woman was in the village of Fnidk on the north coast of Morocco when she saw a 50-year-old woman with the girl getting into a taxi. She tried to join them – sharing cabs is common in Morocco – but the woman refused to let her. She later discovered the taxi had taken them to the village of Housima. She described the girl as wearing an orange blouse with a dummy in her mouth.

Roz??? How do you do it??????? Simply amazing? On little sleep on top of it?

How's the boy? I have a son, an only child (he's 11). From word of mouth I have heard that boys can take breakups much harder than girls (I find that hard to believe growing up with emotional women). So I worry about these things, especially since boys get all quiet and everything. They don't vent and talk it out like girls, yikes.
