^^ right...it's so disgusting! have morals sank so low that none of them felt it was wrong to gang rape a 15 yr old girl? and did they think they were going to get away with it?? i mean wake the f*&* up and think about it for a second...it's not smart and they are going to be caught and pay for what they did sooner or later and in one way or another.

I do know that Richmond is a high crime area. So, to be honest - I'm not surprised. These people are too afraid to come forth with information because they'll be targeted for snitching, etc. And obviously to them, keeping their reputation is more important than getting these appalling human beings off the streets.
It's the same scenario as the Chicago boy who was beaten to death, and there was phone footage of tons of people just watching.

Speaking of Kitty Genovese, because there were so many people present, the Bystander Effect was definitely at play here. The more people witnessing a crime taking place, the less likely it is that anyone will call in for help.

This is such a sad story! That no one in a group this size felt they could intervene, or help the girl, rather that they cheered and watched is sickening.
It reminds me also of the movie 'The Accused' and if you recall the ending, the men who just watched and cheered ended up being convicted as well.
It is obvious that the men who raped the girl would be prosecuted but so should those who fostered the environment. If they can all be caught...
As for the girl, these people are out of their minds to think a drunk, or passed out girl is a willing participant. She might as well have screamed and fought back in terms of what was done to her. Drunk, or sober, she was gang raped.
I really hope this spurs the community to be vigilant and protect their children. And, that this girl's story works as a lesson to help people understand that their own safety has to be paramount. You simply cannot be trusting of just anyone.

I am truly horrified by this story in a way I haven't been in along time....the rapists were bad enough but what kind of human being watches and films it on his cell phone....that horrifies me beyond belief......

I am so glad my parents warned me about drinking (especially around males) when I was a teenager....they drilled into me the fear of exactly what happened to this girl ....never drink to the point where you incapacitate yourself and make yourself vulnerable to be preyed on and don't let men even men you think are "nice guys" bring you your drinks (have the waitress deliver it or get it yourself) and if you go to the ladies room and leave your drink unattended don't drink the rest of it....my parents drilled that into me and I still keep those things in mind as an adult

Update: Third Suspect in Custody

(10-27) 22:24 PDT RICHMOND, CALIF. -- Two more suspects who allegedly joined a group of young men who laughed and shot photos as several of them raped a Richmond High School girl have been arrested, police said Tuesday.

One of the suspects, a 21-year-old Richmond man whose name was not released, was arrested Tuesday night on suspicion of sexual assault and rape, said police Lt. Mark Gagan. The other suspect is a 15-year-old boy who attends the school and knew the victim. The youth was booked on suspicion of sexual assault at Contra Costa County Juvenile Hall in Martinez. His name was withheld because he is a minor.

The first suspect arrested, Manuel Ortega, 19, who dropped out of Richmond High in 2007, was arrested as he ran from the scene of the attack at the school about midnight Saturday, police said. He was booked on suspicion of rape, kidnapping and robbery, and could be formally charged today. Police initially said about six young men were involved in the attack. But investigators said Tuesday that they now believe that as many as 10 assailants, ranging in age from 15 to their early 20s, committed a "slew of crimes" against the girl - including raping her and stealing her jewelry.

The men laughed and took photos as they took turns assaulting the girl, police said.

Police expect to make more arrests, Detective Ken Greco said Tuesday. Authorities are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the conviction of any of the assailants.

Officers passed out flyers in the area of the campus Tuesday and served search warrants at undisclosed locations.

Greco said Ortega and the arrested teenager have shown no remorse during police interviews. He called the incident "disgusting" and "a sad state of affairs."

"This is the worst thing I've heard of," said Greco, who has been in law enforcement for 29 years. "It just shocked the conscience of responding officers."

The girl knew at least one of the assailants, the 15-year-old boy, investigators said.

The attack began when someone in the group invited the girl to join in a drinking session after she left Richmond High's homecoming dance early about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, police said.

The girl quickly became drunk, and the attack began. During the next two hours, as many as two dozen people may have witnessed the rapes or been aware of what was happening, but didn't report it, police said.

Officers were finally alerted by a woman "who was several blocks away who heard people discussing what was occurring" at the school on 23rd Street and called police, police Lt. Mark Gagan said.

Officers found the girl semiconscious beneath a picnic table. She was airlifted to a hospital.

The attack has raised questions about campus security. Richmond High has surveillance cameras, but none is working, school officials said. They said a new system should be in place in the next few months.

Four police officers and several school security staffers were on hand at the homecoming dance. But two of the staffers, known as site supervisors, left about 9 p.m. because of a "prior commitment," said Marin Trujillo, spokesman for the West Contra Costa Unified School District.

Police also believed they had enough officers on hand to provide security, Trujillo said.

The way I understand it, those 20 people weren't just standing around watching and not doing anything...they were standing around, watching, and pleasuring themselves by watching this sick act.

There's lots of sickos out there who have the gang-bang, "watching", or rape fantasy...

Reading this made me sick to my stomach. I cannot imagine what the poor girl is going through. That must be so painful. Physically and also mentally.

These people are animals. Why do they need to learn compassion / right or wrong? Is it really that hard?? Most of us are compassionate & have a sense of what is right or what is wrong without having learned it. If somebody has to learn this, there's obviously something seriously messed up with them.

This incident makes me SO angry & so upset for this poor innocent girl. The fact that it was on her homecoming dance makes me want to cry. A homecoming is something one looks back on in their life as a memory - a happy one.

I pray they lock up every single one of them.

Update. 5 Now In Custody.

(10-28) 07:21 PDT RICHMOND -- Two more suspects were arrested overnight for allegedly being among a group of young men who raped and robbed a 15-year-old girl outside a dance at Richmond High School, bringing to five the number of people in custody, police said today.

The latest arrest happened at 11 p.m. Tuesday when a 17-year-old Pinole boy turned himself in at Richmond police headquarters, Lt. Mike Gormley said. Officers went to the boy's home earlier but didn't find him, police said.

Also arrested Tuesday night were a 16-year-old San Pablo boy and 21-year-old Salvador Rodriguez of Richmond. On Monday, police arrested Manuel Ortega, 19, and a 15-year-old boy, a student at Richmond High who knows the rape victim...

Police initially said about six young men were involved in the Saturday night attack. But investigators said Tuesday that they now believe that as many as 10 assailants, ranging in age from 15 to their early 20s, committed a "slew of crimes" against the girl, including raping her and stealing her jewelry.

I could not stop reading about recent developments. My heart goes out to the girl and her father. There are reports that the father was looking for his daughter around the school's vicinity when the attacks against the girl was taking place.

Quote:
Police said the girl left the dance and was walking to meet her father for a ride home when a classmate invited her to join a group drinking in the courtyard. The victim had drank a large amount of alcohol by the time the assault began, police said. The girl's father was looking for her during the attack, according to the LA Times:

"Police were finally called after a female student overhead people talking about the rape. She called 911 and told dispatchers what she had heard, Gagan said.

When officers arrived on the scene, the assault was still going on. Several suspects fled as officers found the girl naked from the waist up, Gagan said."

The article said the victim was drinking with a group of friends, I'm wondering where did those friends go? Did I miss something? I mean how come she was left alone? It makes me wonder if those friends she was drinking with were part of the crowd of 20 people that stood by and watched or maybe they were the people that raped her.

I am under the impression that the group of friends she was drinking with ARE the people who ended up raping her and robbing her. I think a more correct phrasing would be "the group of PEOPLE she was drinking with" as clearly they were not her friends by any stretch of the imagination. The girl was called over by one of the guys she knew and it went from there.

I was hoping the girl was unconscious during this horrific event, but it turned out when she was found, she was semiconscious. So, so sad.
