I think the best way to go about it is figure out how many people are going to go the week before the 12th and then call up Fred's and Brasserie....

How funny that you named two places where I made reservations for restaurant week (beginning next week, btw!), so Fred's is my vote! (Also, since I won't be shopping, I don't mind going downtown but this is only for plan b!)

I have a suggestion. The Peninsula has IMO the best Sunday Brunch in Manhattan. Trust me, I've tried them all. The food is great. You can either do the "buffet" which really isn't a true buffet. They have an omelet station, seafood section, meat section, etc. I will have to check out the price though for the prix fix brunch. You can also order off their menu too.

Freds might be a go depending on how many are going. You have to make a reservation about 2 weeks prior for big parties, I would say over 6 people is considered a big party. Plus they will rush you out for the next party. Their food is pretty good, but the Peninsula is better.

If you want to consider downtown, Spice Market is really good although I have never had brunch there. Then there is Pastis. Both are in the meat packing district.

I've not been to the Peninsula but that's also uptown so certainly a great option. I checked online and Sunday is the ala carte 11:30 - 2:30. It's pretty small (65 people or so seating) so I think we'd need to reserve well ahead of time. I would hope they would have a "no champagne" option tho for people who don't drink.

My original thought had been brunch downtown somewhere, but then it seemed like such a hassle going uptown to shop where most of the boutiques are (see earlier posts by people in the thread -- which is how we ended up with the uptown selections). And Minnie is right, Pastis tho great fun is an absolute zoo on Sundays.

Hubba -- do you want to check on the Peninsula brunch for Sunday/champagne/no champagne and then we'd know what we're comparing to? I'd like to keep it as affordable as possible so everyone feels comfortable.

I did some review searching and found this about the Peninsula

First of all... We were surprised to learn that brunch was a buffet and not what was listed on the menu outside. We figured that was okay, until we saw the bill--$90 each. Plus tip and tax. Ouch.

I'd say that's a major ouch !! Also looked at the menu -- it's a very nice menu but that really is alot of money to spend for brunch. My hsb is a chef so I'm used to paying $$ for great food too.

The Brasserie is 27 + tax and tip for their Sunday buffet. Served 11 - 3

I can't find a brunch pricing for Freds on line -- am thinking it will be more than the B, less than Pen

And tea at the Four Seasons is $46 plus tax and tip (that includes finger sandwiches, desserts, scones). I keep going back to that as an option because I know people there and think they'd treat us really well. But it doesn't start till 2.

Brasserie and Fred's seem to be the front runners so far.

Well okay. I guess the Peninsula is out then. Sorry. I think our choices have been narrowed down to Brasserie or Freds. Both have good food and won't break the bank.

both will be super busy, i guess i'm thinking i would prefer an actual restaurant as opposed to a department-store restaurant...

I'm going to call them both next week and see how much notice they need for a large party, and gauge their reaction to 10 to 20, at what number they'd split us into more than one table -- how late we could add people, etc -- as I'd be willing to bet we'll end up losing or gaining some people along the way as we get closer.

Next choice: Time -- I'm thinking 12 or 1 pm -- we might have to be flexible too on that but let me know what you all think.
