Professor Earl Ertman, my freshman year of college. He taught Art History and was such a great teacher and so full of knowledge. He also had such passion for what he was teaching, he made me want to do well.

I've had so many influential teachers, I could name at least 4 or 5 that have made a profound difference in my life. Two that are very dear to my heart are: 1) Mr. Strahl, my 7th grade teacher, for treating me like someone special and thus helping me go from being the extremely shy, nerdy glasses-wearing, self-conscious new kid in school to one who had friends and wasn't afraid to speak up in class. And 2) Mr. Jim Hannon, art teacher extraordinaire and my mentor throughout four years of high school, nuturing my creative talent and again helping me grow out of my shyness, ultimately helping me to become the successful graphic designer and manager that I am today. Thanks guys!

Is it awful if I don't have one?
I mean I did great in school and college but there really wasn't one teacher that did anything special for me. I didn't dislike my teachers (most of them) but I didn't love them either. To me, school was like a job. I went there everyday, made the best of it, and went home. I know this thread is about recognizing a teacher that made a difference but I can't think of one. That being said, I know that teachers DO make a big difference in some people's life - I see it and hear about it all the time. So I guess I'd like to recognize ALL the teachers that go the extra mile and take the time to help out a student in need.

My eighth-grade history teacher, a quietly elegant woman with a silver bob and great intellect, is one of the most inspiring people I have ever met.
Mrs. Mannion's teaching methods were never just reading the textbook and answering review questions-- she created in-class assignments that were actually fun and educational, and we actually never had too much homework from her. We played trivia games often, which were everyone's favorite. We were all also really good. No one was rowdy, everyone paid attention and participated. It was the Mannion Effect. Not only was she a great teacher; she was a fantastic person. You could sit and listen to her talk and talk and talk, and you still would not have a portion of the extent of her knowledge. You wouldn't be bored at all, though; she would keep things interesting. Always. On a personal level, we liked each other a lot. We were pretty similar-- always had things to say, always asking questions, eager to learn. Someday, I hope to age as gracefully and beautifully as she has. I heard that she will be retiring after this year. The world will not be the same without people educated by Mrs. Mannion. |

Nancy Clark Brown, Washington State University Interior Design/Interior Architecture. She never passed judgement and believed in the originality of her students and more importantly embraced it.

My most influential teacher is actually not mine, but my 4 yo daughter's.
My daughter has Autism, and her teacher, Miss Kay, humbles me daily with the patience and enthusiasm with which she teaches her kids. She has taught me that Autism isn't a life sentence, and that while there is certain tragedy in this world, Autism isn't it. Miss Kay has taught me to embrace the child that my daughter is today, not the child that I thought she would be. She taught me that perfection is often times wonderfully...imperfect. ![]()

Mrs. Newman, AP Chemistry--one of the best teachers ever. Though I hated chemistry, her dedication to the subject was just phenomenal.

Mrs. Gove my 5th grade teacher. I was not the richest kid in school, nor the most motivated, but Mrs. Gove always taught me that I could do and be whatever I wanted. I was always "good enough" in her eyes, even when other teachers said "she will never amount to anything"(and yes, I actually had teachers say that!). Mrs. Gove was always there to talk to when I had problems at home, and I still talk to her to this day, I am even closer to her then I am my own Mother. If it wasnt for her being there to talk to throughout my life, I honestly dont know where I would be today. Because of her I always knew I had the world at my finger tips, and nothing was impossible. I credit her for all of the success Ive had in my life, and all that is still to come.

My most influential teacher was Mary Galbraith, PhD. She was my English/Children's Literature professor my sophomore year at San Diego State University. It was a small class, so Dr. Galbraith was able to establish a close relationship with all of us in her class. This class had a huge impact on me because it enabled me to explore my passion for words and literature. (I'm such a geek!)
![]() ![]() For all the papers we had to write, Dr. Galbraith always left the most insightful comments. She also held one-on-one meetings in which we would talk about our writing processes and thoughts regarding our papers. During these meetings, Dr. Galbraith always asked if she could keep copies of my papers as models for next semester, and she continuously encouraged me to pursue a profession in the writing field. Coming from her, someone I highly respected and admired, this was the highest form of flattery. Five years later, I am now an English teacher, and I love what I do. Thanks, Dr. Galbraith!

Although all my teachers have made an impact in my life and have taught me so many things, my favorite would probably have to be Mrs. Kabe, my first grade teacher. I was a new student at this Catholic school, and many of my classmates then all knew eachother from the year before. She always made me feel welcome and included. She also taught us all some great things that we still carry with us today. She was always sweet to me and gave good advice. She had a passion for what she did and cared that her students learned. And considering how it was the first grade, she set an excellent foundation for all of us for all of our years of education ahead. She really was the perfect teacher.
