Mr. Robblee in Grade 3 was the most influential teacher for me. He taught me the love of books and reading and I still remember him.

My 10th grade English teacher, Ms. Row. I just got to the US and was just learning English. She was always patient with all her students and always carried a smile on her face.

Mrs. Gleim was my most influential teacher. She was my 7th grade English teacher - she was skilled in her craft, instilled within us the desire to excel, and had an amazing rapport with us. She is the reason I am a Language Arts teacher today!

My mother is my favorite teacher because she is one, and also a college professor of mine, Dr. Askin. I am so inspired by both of these teachers for their passion, enthusiasm, intelligence, and concern for students. I became a teacher myself and always keep their influence with me.

Bob Lavigne, who gave me my career by teaching me the way
to make art, actually make it. 40 years later he still sticks in my mind. I was able to call him a few months ago, and he remembered me. I am even more thankfull for that. Good teachers never forget!

My father died when I was in 4th grade and that year I had the best teacher. My father died Nov. 13th and she was so important that year in keeping me grounded. Ms. Loinbuger was a young hip women who gave her best to her students and she helped ease my fathers death to the class and gave me her best. I will never forget her. She made a difficult time easier.

Thirty years later, Mrs. Barbara Benstein continues to have a significant influence on my life. She exposed her students to the foreign world of France in a middle class suburb of Detroit. Not only did she teach the standard nouns, verbs and conjugation of this romantic language, she provided experiences to feel what it was like living in another country and that culture. We celebrated Bastille Day (also Mrs. Benstein’s wedding anniversary), the French national holiday, on July 14th. Occasional dinners in our beloved teacher’s home awakened our culinary sense of adventure with coq au vin, pate and French fromage (cheese). The crème de la crème was a trip to France immediately following graduation. We begged Mrs. Benstein to take us in her off year of travel and she finally consented. That trip was the initial chapter in what has become a lifetime of travel, adventure and explorations of other cultures. Now living far from that suburb of Detroit, I realize how fortunate I was to have such a special teacher in my life.
