I thought it was because sometimes Macys say they don't have it but they do and they can't check unless you have the SKU? Lol.. I dunno. :)

SKU/UPC numbers are unique to every product so if you have a SKU/UPC number you can go to a store and a lot of the time they can search their inventory for you

it's helpful at Macy's and Nordstrom since they have multiple locations where their computers are linked
