On Your Marc

In the past few months, Marc Jacobs has been busy creating costumes for the "Amoveo" ballet at Paris' Opera Garnier, launching the Marc Jacobs Waterford tabletop collection and signing a deal with Zannier Group for an extensive collection of Little Marc children's wear that will be launched in the spring. And Jacobs has been doing all that while on a strict diet and work-out regime that has resulted in a newly svelte figure.

The momentum looks set to continue next year with several initiatives that will further the brand globally.

The year will kick off with a new advertising campaign for Jacobs featuring Dakota Fanning. The ads, which will break in February issues of W and Vogue, were shot by Juergen Teller on location in Los Angeles in mid-November. "Marc loves her as a character and thinks she is beautiful and a great actress," said Robert Duffy, president. "He loved the idea of having this young, small girl in the clothes, and we made them in her size to shoot her in."

Jacobs and Duffy are getting ready for a move of sorts. The duo has decided to stage the Marc by Marc Jacobs show during London Fashion Week in February.

"We have a really nice Marc by Marc business in Europe," Duffy said. "I always felt when we showed it in the U.S. we would do it the day after, because Marc had to get back to Paris for Louis Vuitton. I always felt bad, because Marc by Marc has a strong identity but would always get lumped in with the Collection show. I also always wanted to show in Europe."

The aim is to represent the collection on Feb. 16, which would coincide with the opening of the first Collection store in London. The 2,800-square-foot unit will be located in a former antiques store at 24-25 Mount Street in Mayfair and offer women's and men's apparel, children's wear, home furnishings, accessories and in-house public relations office. The store was designed by architectural firm Stephan Jaklitsch Design.

In addition, a Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc boutique is scheduled to open in February in Moscow, and a Marc by Marc store is slated to open in Suvannah, Ga. A Dubai Marc by Marc boutique is opening next week, and the company just signed a deal to open a Marc by Marc boutique in Tokyo's Omotesando area. There are also plans for a large unit on Madison Avenue in New York that will house all the categories and is scheduled to open next year, though few details could be learned at this time.
