Teeth Whitening - Do u do it?

I've had great results w/ whitestrips. I have really sensitive teeth so I don't get the very strongest ones (the ones I get are "premium" as opposed to "preumium ultra") and I only use one strip a day instead of two. I can't use them for more than about five days in a row w/o my teeth hurting too much. I use them a few times a month for maintenence too. People -- even my dentist:smile: -- have commented on how white my teeth are, so I'm really happy with them. The trays sound good too. As far as zoom, I'm glad you guys warned me how much it hurts -- I'll steer clear of that!

Sorry if this sounds stupid...but how would sensitive teeth react to the whitestrips?? Ive always been morbidly afraid of the dentist and very ocd about my teeth, so ive been to afraid to try the whitestrips. However, my smile could use some brightening up! Are the whitestrips too painful?

I just started using a product called "GoSmile", which I bought at Ulta, but first saw in Bliss. It is really easy to use - little capsules that you brush on anytime (no drinking or eating 20 minutes afterwards.) I had great results with the whitening kit and they have ones that you can use on a daily basis to keep things bright. I do not have sensitive teeth, however, so I am not sure on that issue.

I am more afraid of white-strips than I am of snakes - and I am scared to death of snakes!!

It's something that you will never know though until you try it - it seems that either you can or cannot use white strips - I just cant - it feels like someone is slicing a knife through my teeth on the second day, and not just when they are on my teeth either - but the ENTIRE next day. it's just horrible.

but my best friend and mom and brother can use them regularly with no issue. My dad and my son can't use them either because of pain. so good luck - and keep your fingers crossed in hopes that you are one of the ones who can do it!

that's why i'm hesitant to get zoom done since my teeth are already sensitive and i don't want to be in pain! haha i'm such a baby when it comes to my teeth

I was told by my dental specialist...-I have had serious work done.-.That teeth whitening actually damages the teeth..like taking a layer off of them...he refuses to do it at his office...Just a thought..he is pretty stong minded on it..

i never had it done before. my father in law is a dentist and has always discouraged it. says it wear down the enamel and increases the risk of needing root canals in the future. at fiest i did not believe him but he showed me articles.
he prescribed flouride which has helped with the sensitivity.

I had the Britesmile treatment at a dental office about 18 months ago. It worked really well and it's still going strong.

I also have the whitening pens, and every 6 months I do a 2 week course to maintain a little.

I brush with the Britesmile toothpaste twice a day.

My dentist (who doesn't do whitening) and the literature I've read say that Britesmile is not harmful to teeth.

It does make the enamel temporarily more porous, which is why you are advised to avoid coloured food, lipstick etc for 24 hours after the procedure.

But no permanent damage.

I would just start with one whitestrip a day, or even every other day, until you see if they hurt. My teeth started hurting after a few days -- they got really sensitive. But once I laid off the whitestrips, they were fine. Then I used a few more strips a week later. I did just deal with some pain -- not intolerable, I'm a big baby! -- the very first time I ever used them -- went for around 7 or 8 days in a row. Since then, my teeth have stayed white with just occassional use.

I guess everyone is different tho, so the best thing would probably be to give it a try...but SLOWLY. That sounds like the problem with zoom, once you do it, there's no going back!

I did not realize so many people whiten...I must be lucky that my teeth are a light shade. My dentist always told me if I needed dentures it would really be custom. He said there was not a shade that matched mine. Good genetics I suppose (at least for something)

I'm a dentist and what I would recommend is to use the tray as it gives you more freedom to bleach your teeth anytime you feel the need to at your own time without having to sit in the cahir for a few hours.

The trays are the best way to go. The bleach is definately stronger than the over the counter stuff. However you can get differing concentrations of bleach from your dentist, depending upon how you react. Use sensodyne or Crest "sensitive" toothpaste. Zoom is known to be more painful because it is concentrated in one or two office visits.
Hope this helps!
