Oh how exciting HGF!! I must have been away on my business trip when you posted this and now you must be away on your tip as I'm posting this! 
Well, if you have internet access and can check in I hope you have a wonderful trip!! Italy is so beautiful!! As far as theft goes, thieves always go for the easy target, as long as you're vigilant, you don't look clueless and you keep your stuff close to you at all times you will be fine.

I lived in Italy for a year. I carried a padlocked bookbag. It's the only way. A friend of mine had a messenger bag IN FRONT OF HER at her waist and had EVERYTHING stolen. The purse hook is NOT a good idea. Yes, it will keep everything off the ground, but still says "look at my bag".
