Scandinavian tPFers, need suggestions!

  1. DH and I will be spending 2 weeks in Helsinki, Stockholm and Copenhagen. We'll do all the tourist essentials but I'm hoping any tPFers there can provide suggestions of great places to go shopping? Thanks in advance!

  2. Welcome to Helsinki! :woohoo:
I hope we have some snow by the time you’re here. Now it’s just sooooo gloomy..

Please check out this site: http://www.designdistrict.fi/design_district. Perfect shopping guide! My favourite areas described by the street!

Juha Tarsala shoes in Kämp Galleria (check out www.kampgalleria.fi, other good stores there as well and restaurant La Cocina or is it hotel Glos lobby bar, I don’t know which, Kluuvikatu 4, but they make the best mojitos, especially if it's made by one dark skinny boy with dark rimmed glasses). The district around Kämp Galleria is great for shopping in general, Finnish design on Etelä Esplanadi and fashion on Pohjois Esplanadi. Aleksanterinkatu is full of H&M, Zara etc. Shopping centers Forum and Kamppi have the usual H&M etc, but some surprises along the way.

Della Marga on Pohjois Esplanadi (quite near Kämp Galleria), they carry Chanel, Armani and such.

Kaarina K on Kasarmikatu 25, has at least D&G, Versace and others I cannot recall right now.

Nina’s on Bulevardi 13 (MiuMiu, Barbara Bui etc), www.ninas.fi.

Provokante on Mannerheimintie 2, sells Chloe, Gucci, Prada, Missoni, www.provokantestore.fi.

Mereija on Mannerheimintie 56 (opposite the Opera), recycled stuff, clothes, jewellery etc. www.mereija.fi. I fell in love with a bracelet made of zippers =)

My favourite place for sushi is restaurant Koto, Kalevankatu 21. Plenty of good restaurants in the city, I would recommed restaurant Juuri, Korkeavuorenkatu 27. They have the most amazing sapas menu, tapas with finnish ingredients, do try them all  www.juuri.fi

Restaurant Baker's, Mannerheimintie 12 (opposite the department store Stockmann), sells a glass of cava for 1 e from Tuesday to Saturday 17pm till 18.30. It's crowded on Friday ;) and you're allowed to buy only 4 glasses at one time and they don't sell it by the bottle (tried it a hundred times:lol:)

    HTH!

  3. Kiitos MsReya! This is just the kind of info I was hoping for!! Because the dollar is so weak I probably won't buy anything that's not local (eg, can be bought elsewhere). But besides Marimekko I didn't know where else to look/go.

For the Finland part of our trip we'll actually be spending more time in the country (Sarkisalo) with relatives but we'll still get a few days in Helsinki so I hope to try some of the places you mentioned!

  4. my favourite shop in helsinki is helsinki 10 which is on eerikinkatu 3. it's in the same building as a rather less wholesome "gentlemen's club" called alcatraz but don't let that put you off,
they don't keep the same opening hours  their stock changes pretty often though, sometimes it's fabulous and sometimes a bit blaah.

i also like hundpark on iso roobertinkatu 17-19, they have a lot of slightly edgy accessories, i always get compliments on pretty much everything i've bought there.

lux on uudenmaankatu is nice too, same sort of idea as the other two really

those are the sort of places i tend to go in helsinki, i don't usually go to the normal designery shops because they're mostly better in london where i usually spend most of my time. sometimes i will wander in though, just to see if the price is better  the places on my list aren't too expensive at all, a lot of things by independent designers that you wouldn't find elsewhere, especially in hundpark. walk down fredrikinkatu as well, there are a lot of nice boutiques there. i have a personal beef with della marga, they tend to sell ancient stock at full price :push: :cursing: :nogood:

as for copenhagen, i copy pasted (and translated) a list of a few places i sent to my cousin last summer, hopefully it's not horrendously out of date
