Question re: Stores to visit in NY

  1. Hi, everyone!

I'm new to this forum and will be hitting New York this Saturday :yahoo:

I'm not very familiar with NY but I've heard of sample sales and stores with MAJOR sales (I was looking at another thread and there's Kate Spades for ~$20!! - Century 21?????). So to all the New Yorkers' here, what stores (and where!) should I hit to get to these fabulous sales????!!!!! Looking forward to it!

  2. Okay, I consider myself a C-21 expert (since I visit/stalk there 2-3 times per week) so let me help on that front. Century 21 is across the street from the World Trade Center site. The easiest thing to do to get there is to ask anyone on the street or hop in a cab and have him take you there or go into any subway station and ask the guy in the booth. Not everyone knows where C-21 is but everyone knows where the WTC site is. C-21 is directly across the street on Broadway - the large building with a lot of construction in front of it. If you go in the Broadway entrance, bags are directly to your right. I think the Kate Spades were gone earlier this week but they had Koobas ranging from $45 to $130. If you have cosmetics to buy also, go to those counters first (as you come in the Broadway entrance, head right toward the purses then hang a left towards the sunglasses then go up 2-3 steps and cosmetics is to your right. Discounts are not great here, but if you spend at least $30, most counters will give you a $5 store coupon good anywhere but cosmetics and bigger coupons as you spend more. If you buy sunglasses, be sure to take them to the counter where the sunglasses are on display to get your free matching case - you can take them there before or after you pay for them.

If you are looking for designer clothing, bypass the second floor all together (most of the clothes there can be found at a low-end Macy's so if you are only here for the weekend, there are better places to focus). The third floor currently has some great deals on designer jeans (highly recommend the Heatherette skinny jeans for $40-$50 plus they have all the staples - 7FAM, TR, Joe's, etc. for under $100 a pair). They also got new shipments and have some good clearance on Marc Jacobs. As you come up the escalator, Italian Designers (Versace, D&G, CN, etc.) will be on your right and contemporary (Marc Jacobs, Theory, Betsey Johnson, etc.) will be on your left. I can provide more details as to how this floor is broken down if you give me an idea of what you're looking for in particular, though its better just to go with an open mind and see where the bargains are. I am not a fan of most of the basement where they keep the home goods but you shouldn't miss the watches. Go down the escalator and walk around as if you were trying to find the up escalator and you will see the counter. Earlier this week they had Betsey Johnsons for $50 and Fendis for $150-300.

To get to shoes, follow the footprints located on the second floor or ask a sales associate. You can also go at the exit by the cosmetics counters, hang a left and the entrance to shoes is a couple doors down on your left. There is a lower level for ladies shoes as well that generally carries the highest end and lowest end designers (highest on the left, lowest on the right as you come down the stairs).

I believe that they open at 10 on Saturday and 11 on Sunday. Be there as close to that time as you possibly can. The absolute best time to go is at 7:45 a.m. on a weekday. Most importantly, while you find a rare exception, by and large the sales people are not extremely friendly and not helpful. They generally will direct you to a particular area but cannot always tell you where a particular brand would be located if they have it (and I have helped many tourists given wrong info before). They will pretty much never help you find a size or see if something is in stock out back.

I hope I haven't thrown too much info at you. Let me know if you need to know anything else.
  3. Wow, thanks for the advice :yahoo:
  4. Unfortunately, you've missed the sample sale season in NYC. In August, the only one I know follows. I have no idea hhow good (or bad) it is.
